“Discipline” Network Graph

Hi everyone! For this week’s assignment I decided to read and analyze the short story, “Discipline”, by Geeta Tewari. After opening and closing many stories, I finally settled on this one because I found it pretty interesting how the Hindu culture was incorporated into it.

I had a few different choices when building my Network Graph, but decided to organize it by the characters and their relation to the main character, Aatari, and their status of virginity. As you can see in my attached photo, there are three categories; “Yes” they are a virgin, “No” they are not a virgin, and “Unsure”, as it was not made clear in the story. The organization of the graph conveys an interesting theme amongst some of the characters, her three childhood friends are all Virgins. As suggested in the story, Virginity until marriage is an important value in the Hindu religion, so it is not surprising to see her childhood friends are virgins.

  1. I love the criteria you chose for what is considered a node a link (yes, no, and unsure of virginity). By coloring the criteria node blue and the character orange, you did a good job at organizing the relationships and making it aesthetically presentable. Keep up the great work!

  2. Organizing the characters by virginity gave your network visualization a unique twist. I like how you enabled us to learn something from the network other than merely connecting one character to another. Good job!
