OpenRefine for Cylinder Recordings

The facet function of OpenRevise seems to be most relevant operation in organizing our cylinder recording data. Our group was interested in researching the type of musical mediums used between 1918-1930 to explore what was relevant in that time period. The facet function would then allow us to easily sort out the different instruments used in addition to the frequency of those used. By doing so, we could then easily visualize the common mediums used during that time period. The same method can be used to examine the languages most widely captured with these cylinder recordings, which could perhaps point to possible relationships of cylinder recordings and a specific culture during that time. Facet mimics the query function I’m accustomed to using in GIS software which I find particularly useful when extracting meaning and patterns from raw data.
