OpenRefine and Photography

In our dataset, we are looking at a dataset of the Carnegie Museum of Art photography collection which  contains information about who took it, when they took it, where they were born, and etc. Our research question is: what are the trends that can be seen through this dataset? In other words, is there a trend in relation to the nationality of the photographers, or is there something to be said about their birthplace? We can get this information by using Text Facet to clean up the data and see the quantity for each different attribute. We would also clean up white spacing and change cases to collapse the data so that it is more accurate. Then, we can see that there are only three places from where the photographers were born and that the nationality for most of these photographers are American. It would be great to create visual charts and graphics to represent the data to visualize the trends.

  1. My group is a close cousin to yours I suppose! We’re working with the dataset on Carnegie Museum of Contemporary Art and are exploring many similar questions regarding birthplace and nationalities. I also agree that once a lot of the white space is removed, the Carnegie data will be a lot easier to comprehend.
