The dataset I chose to examine is the Building and Safety Permit Information dataset. The dataset consists of 56 columns which include assessor book, assessor page, assessor parcel, tract, block, lot and reference number. The data is owned by the Building and Safety department, which issues permits for the construction, remodeling and repair of buildings and structures in Los Angeles.
The ontology makes the most sense through the point of view of land developers, construction companies and builders.
This dataset can tell you more about specific rules and regulations for property construction. It can inform consumers and construction companies which areas of the city are adequate to build in as well as what can be built.
Overall, I think this dataset is very detailed. It consists of a vast amount of permits including plumbing, HVAC system, fire sprinklers and elevators. Each permit is detailed with location and building specifics. I think that the only thing that the dataset is missing is the name of the building owner or party of interest.
If I am starting over with this data set, I would make the point of view for people like myself, who are less educated on building permits. I would make the datasets more simple to understand, maybe including fewer categories. Also, i would categorize the permits by type and location.
