Ontology of Crime Data from 2010 to present

The data set that I chose to look at was the Crime Data from 2010 to present. This dataset categorizes itself within 26 different categories. Some of the categories include the date, time, area, crime description, weapon, etc. I feel that this ontology would make most sense and be of most use for police officers, crime investigators, or people who work within this field. Overall, I feel that this dataset clearly displays the necessary information that would be needed for these workers to access helpful information. For example I feel that this dataset provides enough information to follow crime trends within specific neighborhoods, crime rates within neighborhoods, etc.

I do feel that this dataset does a good job in organizing the important and necessary data. As mentioned earlier, I feel that those who do access this dataset would be able to clearly and easily find what he or she would be looking for. This dataset even goes into specific detail of where the exact coordinates of the crime happened. I feel that this data will also help officers and crime investigators to patrol specific areas more closely and try to reduce crime in areas where crime seems to be high.

Although I feel like this dataset does a pretty good job with the amount of data that is provided; however, there are still a few thing points that are missing that may deem useful. One thing that I noticed was that there was no information about the perpetrator. There was nothing about the gender, race, or any other information. Also, there does seem to be some information regarding arrests but it seems very general. The lack of information had me wonder whether the perpetrator had been arrested and released or still on the run.

If I were to start over on this ontology, I think I would change this dataset so that some points could be more understandable. I feel that in general, the information that is provided is pretty easy to follow, but there are a few data points that I do not clearly understand. There are a few “codes” that seem a bit vague for general knowledge. If I could start over, I would probably try to provide a bit more information and clarity on that. Also, I would include more information about the perpetrator. I would include the victim’s gender and age and specific information on the status of the perpetrator’s arrest.

Overall, I did find this dataset useful and interesting to look though. Although there are a few weak points to this dataset, overall I do feel and hope that this information would be found helpful to everyone.

  1. This data set seems really interesting. I do agree that having more information about the perpetrators would be much more helpful. I guess most of these data sets are just raw data that aren’t too user-friendly.
