I chose the dataset “Listing of Active Businesses” from the City of LA website. The data owner and department is the Office of Finance and the frequency of updating is monthly. The topic is “A Prosperous City.” The dataset is divided into locations and names. Within those two categories are categories like DBA name, street address, zip code, location start date, and business name. The dataset itself also contains 497,000 rows and 16 columns. When looking at the ontology we understand that location and names are what is stressed by the Office of Finance. Through this dataset, someone interested in an active business’ location and most every aspect to do with its location. A company or individual who might find this useful for understanding what kind of businesses are where and understanding the geography and placement of those businesses. The focus of location is very heavy in this dataset.
Other information like the profits, overhead, and foot traffic is not available. If I were to start over with the dataset I would have the money aspect focused on more. For instance, what profits were like and perhaps even the rent cost of the spaces. That way those who are only interested in the financial aspect and not geography could find the dataset more useful.
Good note to point out the profits and traffic of the restaurants. As someone who would potentially be buying a restaurant or possibly wanting to start any business, it would be extremely useful to see how much traffic runs through the area as well as how profitable the area is. Nice job!
