Blog 3: Listing of Active Businesses

I chose the database that has information on Listings of Active businesses in the city of L.A.

Ontology is the organizational strategy to get data out of lots of information and it reflects the view of the person who puts the data together. So this dataset has a listing of all active businesses currently registered with the Office of Finance and its update interval is monthly. The data is stored based on location and each business has information on its city, street address, zip code, mailing address, mailing city, council district, geographical coordinates, and NAICS. This dataset has 16 different columns, therefore, there are 16 content types and it also has 496,904 rows which means it contains 496,904 records. People who are interested in mapping out active business based on geographical information would care the most about this set of data. It might be for a project, a company, or simply an individual who is interested in the location and start date of these businesses to get a better idea of the active business in the city of L.A. This dataset makes it easy to find the specific mailing address of a business or the location account number or even a location description. It also makes it easy to find where the most active business are found so someone can maybe research why that is and if there is a specific attraction that allows businesses to flourish in specific areas. It is also useful to use this dataset to figure out the best location to open a new business. Some people would choose to open a business away from all the competitors in order to get the most amount of clients without having to worry about the other businesses, while some would choose to open up their business next to one that has already been established because they know that a lot of customers would be in the area already and might be attracted to the new business that has opened.

This dataset is very geographical and location-based. Although it focuses on active businesses, it does not give any information on how well the business is doing. It does not even give any information on the business starting date or really the type of business and type of clients it attracts. There is also no information on the people running the business and that might be something people look for while researching different active businesses.

If I were starting over with data-collection, the ontology would probably focus on the starting date of the business, names of CEOs or managers, the number of employees and openings, etc. it would be more focus on the quality of the businesses rather than the geographical information of it.

  1. Hi,

This is a really extensive analysis on the ontology of active businesses in LA. I think you have a really good idea on how to enhance and build up on the current categorization (i.e. stating more details regarding the business’ condition and status). It is especially helpful for decision maker to get a sense of these extra information instead of merely geographical information.

  2. Hi, I think this blog was very easy for me to follow, even though I did not look into this set of data in detail, I was able to understand what the dataset is about and defined the audience for the information. I also think it is really helpful that you included the definition of Ontology in the beginning to state the purpose of this week’s blog.
