The data set that I chose is the active heat map of the los angeles active restaurants. This data set collected all the active businesses within the beverly hills/santa monica/the valley area. Its collection of data includes the address of the building, the name of the restaurant, the mailing address, the business type, the district it falls in, and the day it opened. This data set would be the most helpful to anyone who either may be starting a business or to food critics. For the person who is starting a restaurant this would allow them to be able to see what location would best allow their restaurant to succeed. They could pick a location that their specific restaurant would be one of the only ones in the area. For the food critic this could be helpful to help them plan new places to try and to see where the “food communities” are.
From this data set we can begin to see that the restaurants are closely linked to the communities they are surrounded by. The heat map explains and shows the location of where most restaurants are located. From looking and exploring the heat map and interacting with it i can see that the restaurants tend to clump together in certain locations that are more likely to guarantee customers.
Within this data set some key components get left out that could make the data set more useful. One of the components that could be added would be the amount of customers they receive and how well their business is doing. The data set could also link/combine it with yelp so that we could see the reviews of the restaurant and whether they are a five star or four star restaurant. Another addition that could be made is putting the health code grade in the data set.
If i were to start over with a data set i would add outside links to help give the data set a more complete look to it. By using these outside links it would help people who were looking to use this data set get a more specific answer and information. The heat map part of the data set is really helpful because it gives a visual representation to the data that is provided. It allows the viewer, like myself, to be able to really understand the data collection and what we are looking at.
Nice post, I like this topic because I like food and would find this dataset helpful. I think that adding the link to yelp for reviews would be a great idea because I think a very good amount of people look at the reviews of restaurants before going, and on this ontology would have it all.
