Parking Citations Dataset Analysis

Parking Citation dataset have recorded all information about parking tickets issued in Los Angeles area. After take a look of the dataset, we have an overview of where did the car get the ticket, what kind of car is it, and what was the reason it has been issued a ticket. Let’s break down the content model:

  • Object (individuals): 4,035,844  (record from 01/09/2010 to 10/12/2017)
  • Content Types: 19
    • Ticket Number, Issue Date, Issue Time, Meter ID, Marked Time , RP State Plate (State that issued the plate), Plate Expiry Date (record as year/month), VIN (Vehicle Identification Number), Make (Car Brand), Body Style (record shape and model of a car), Color, Location, Route, Agency, Violation Code, Violation Description (brief description of why the car get the ticket), Fine Amount, Latitude, Longitude

The information in the dataset can make sense to viewers who are interested in issues of parking tickets. Viewers can use this dataset to see:

  • Which month tickets have been issued frequently

  • What day of the month most tickets have been issued

  • What ticket type is issued more frequently

  • Are locations where the car get the ticket related with ticket type

  • Are ticket type related to car type

  • etc.

These questions can help both officers and viewers have a deeper understanding of elements that related to parking citation.

In order to make these records easier for officers who issued and processed the tickets pulled out the record when he/she want to have a review, and make it more convenient for people who get tickets to track their record to see more details, I would add

  • Plate Number: help officer to identify car owner, and people who get the tickets can easily track if they have gotten any tickets
  • Officer Name/ID: Officer who processed tickets can identify who issued the tickets quickly. (that helps when they need more details)
  • Ticket Status (Paid/Pending): so that people who get ticket can check if they already paid it off or not

However, these information probably is confidential information which cannot be shown to the public, and parking citation website can set up ID check system to limit access of these information. (officers can have access to the whole dataset, and people who get ticket can only have access to their own parking citations.)

  1. Nice job breaking up all the different parts of the data, Ranran! You also do a really nice job showing how all these different content types can be used to yield data visualizations.

  2. I really enjoyed this post. It was detail oriented and offered an in-depth visual component allowing for a holistic understanding of the dataset you analyzed without the viewer ever needing to visit the website.

  3. Hi,
I enjoyed reading your analyzation and I think that including all the screenshots of the database made it easy to follow and interesting to look at. I agree that some of the further information you said you would include could be confidential and shouldn’t just simply be open to the public, but I also think it would be a great addition to the database and it would provide us with a better perspective on parking citations in LA.
