More or less “meh”: Vogue 8784 and the Named Ruska

These aren’t the worst dresses I’ve ever worn (far from it), but I’m not head-over-heels about either of them. Vogue 8784 is a wrap dress made from a slate-blue ponte from Joann. I foolishly made it a size or two too large, and while that wouldn’t normally be such a big deal for a wrap dress, this one has pleats in the bodice, and they just don’t sit properly at this size. I think it would be a nice dress if I’d just sized down a bit. I suppose I can take it in.

On the plus side, it wasn’t a difficult sew, and it’s definitely wearable. I just don’t feel like a million bucks in it.

Why are these photos so pixelated? It’s a mystery.

The Named Ruska (from Breaking the Pattern) is a cool dress, just not on me. It came out looking boxy and droopy. Maybe it would look better in something like linen? I think, though, that I need something with better waist definition. I’d thought that was what the waist tie was for, but it’s not meant to really cinch in at the waist; just sort of provide decoration.

This also just feels too short to wear without tights, and I’m afraid I’d look like a bee if I did. Not a bad dress, just not for me. I’m planning to send it to a friend who says she’d wear it. I still haven’t worn it out of the house and don’t think I would.

  1. Hello! I love the dress! I just bought the same pattern! I was wondering if you’re able to help me layout the fabric for the dress as some of the terminology is kind of hard to understand and I don’t want to mess it up ):
