Date&#8217;s <em>Introduction to Database Systems<\/em><\/a>, last updated in 2004, is a classic text and includes helpful introductions to many database concepts. You might also be interested in Date&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/search.library.ucla.edu\/permalink\/01UCS_LAL\/17p22dp\/alma9914797635106531\"><em>Relational Database Dictionary<\/em> <\/a>(2006).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before <em>Wired<\/em> came <em>Datamation<\/em>: the leading popular magazine about computing from the &#8217;60s through the &#8217;80s. Looking at back-issues is a great way to understand a technology in its context, and <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/bitsavers_datamation\">you can do that on the Internet Archive<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Byte<\/em> was a widely read magazine about personal computing in the &#8217;80s and &#8217;90s. Its back issues, like <em>Datamation<\/em>&#8216;s, are <a href=\"https:\/\/vintageapple.org\/byte\/\">available online<\/a>. (The same site offers complete runs of <em>Macworld<\/em> and <em>MacUser<\/em>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may find it helpful to look at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.computinghistory.org.uk\/pages\/60517\/scanned-ibm-manuals\/\">scanned IBM manuals<\/a>. For a history of IBM, see <a href=\"https:\/\/search.library.ucla.edu\/permalink\/01UCS_LAL\/17p22dp\/alma9926595553606533\">Emerson Pugh, <em>Building IBM: Shaping an Industry and its Technology<\/em> (1995)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a history of the software industry, see Martin Campbell-Kelly&#8217;s <em><a href=\"https:\/\/search.library.ucla.edu\/permalink\/01UCS_LAL\/192ecse\/cdi_jndl_porta_oai_ndlsearch_ndl_go_jp_R100000136_I1971430859741046828\">From Airline Reservations to Sonic the Hedgehog: A History of the Software Industry<\/a><\/em> (2003).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>James Cortada has a useful <a href=\"https:\/\/search.library.ucla.edu\/permalink\/01UCS_LAL\/17p22dp\/alma999177573606533\">bibliography of the computing industry<\/a>, with an emphasis on computers&#8217; business applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To get a sense of how popular media covered technical developments, I find <a href=\"https:\/\/global.factiva.com\/en\/sess\/login.asp?XSID=S003Wvf3cVoZXUs5DEs5DEsM9UnN9YnNTByMHn0RtfqMGNw0rfYTUFBQUFBQUFBQUFBQUFBQUFBQUFBQUFBQUFBQUFBQUFBQQAA&amp;cookie=on\">Factiva<\/a> the most useful database.
