Google Fusion Tables is a fairly simple way to go from spreadsheet to data visualization. In this tutorial, you\u2019ll upload a spreadsheet containing the data we created on our Omeka site (which you can find\u00a0here<\/a>) and use it to create a map and some charts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Open Google Fusion Tables<\/h3>\n

Go to fusiontables.google.com<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Click on \u201cCreate a Fusion Table\u201d and sign in with your Google account. (If you don’t have a Google account, pair up with another student!)<\/h3>\n

Once you\u2019re in, click on\u00a0Choose File<\/strong>\u00a0and then select the is289omeka.csv file you downloaded earlier. For\u00a0Separator Character<\/strong>, keep the options as they are (with\u00a0Comma\u00a0<\/strong>selected) and then click\u00a0Next<\/strong>. On the next screen, click\u00a0Next<\/strong>\u00a0again, and finally, click\u00a0Finish<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The next screen shows you your spreadsheet just as it was when you were looking at it in Excel. If you look closely, you’ll see that Fusion Tables has highlighted the data in the first column (the “title” data). Although you don’t have any way of knowing this, I happen to know that this is because Fusion Tables thinks that this is your location data. But we know that’s wrong!<\/p>\n

Change the location column<\/h3>\n

Scroll to the right on your table until you see the “Spatial Coverage” column. If you hover your mouse on the column heading, you’ll see a drop-down menu appears when you click the arrow. From that menu, click on Change<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Then, in the next window, choose\u00a0Location<\/strong> as the type. Leave all the other options the same and click the\u00a0Save<\/strong> button. Now your Fusion Table knows that your Spatial Coverage column contains location data.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Check out a map of locations<\/h3>\n

Click on the\u00a0Map of Title<\/strong>\u00a0tab, but then click on \u201cPause Geocoding\u201d on the window that pops up. Change the\u00a0Location<\/strong> column to “Spatial Coverage” and then click on\u00a0Resume Geocoding.\u00a0<\/strong>When the geocoding completes, you should have a map of museums. Click around and see how much of the data is accurate.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Pretty cool. You can click on each of the points to see which photo was taken there. Play with the various options to see what you get.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

You can share this map if you want! Just click on the\u00a0Share\u00a0<\/strong>button and share the map the same way you\u2019d share a Google doc. You can also embed the map on a website by clicking on\u00a0Tools\u00a0<\/strong>and then\u00a0Publish<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Make some graphs and charts.<\/h3>\n

Let\u2019s look at some other views of the same data. Click on the red \u201cplus\u201d sign on the tabs menu and select\u00a0Add Chart<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Make a bar chart.<\/h3>\n

Click on the\u00a0bar chart<\/strong>\u00a0icon and for\u00a0Category<\/strong>, select\u00a0Subject<\/strong>. Check the\u00a0Summarize data\u00a0<\/strong>checkbox. (An easier way to create a summary bar chart is just to choose the\u00a0Summarize<\/strong>\u00a0option when you\u2019re opening a new tab \u2014 but this way we can switch among different chart types.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
