Please use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dropbox.com\/s\/2fs4aoxgt89gc7b\/micheaux%201mode%20cast%20weighted%20no%20id%20no%20year.csv?dl=1\">this dataset<\/a>, which lists cast members who appeared in Oscar Micheaux&#8217;s silent films. The &#8220;weight&#8221; column indicates the number of times the two people appeared in the same film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To load the dataset, drag it into the empty box. Leave the <strong>Unweighted<\/strong> and <strong>Undirected<\/strong> radio boxes unchecked and press <strong>Calculate<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"star-wars-social-networks\"><a href=\"http:\/\/evelinag.com\/blog\/2016\/01-25-social-network-force-awakens\/index.html#.XG2mxZNKhTY\">Star Wars Social Networks<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Get a walk-through of various network measures and concepts using the example of the characters who appear in <em>Star&nbsp;Wars<\/em> films.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"visualize-social-networks-with-cytoscape\">Visualize social networks with Cytoscape<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"flourish-embed\" data-src=\"visualisation\/787417\"><\/div><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<p>For the graph above, I used the web-based tool <a href=\"https:\/\/flourish.studio\/\"><strong>Flourish<\/strong><\/a>. While Flourish will not calculate measures, it will allow you to create really nice-looking, embeddable, interactive network graphs. Creating the graphs is easy, as long as your data is in the right format.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hdlab.stanford.edu\/palladio\/\"><strong>Palladio<\/strong><\/a> is the simplest way to get a basic network diagram, without bells and whistles or any kind of calculation. I have a tutorial for it <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/miriamposner\/palladio_workshop\/blob\/master\/Getting_Started_with_Palladio.md\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.polinode.com\/\"><strong>Polinode<\/strong><\/a> is a web-based network data visualizer that I have not used, but which some students have told me they like. It is a paid service, but it does offer a free 7-day trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/igraph.org\/r\/\"><strong>The R package igraph<\/strong> <\/a>is a very popular tool for analyzing networks and generating graphs. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jessesadler.com\/post\/network-analysis-with-r\/\">This tutorial from Jesse Sadler<\/a> looks to be a very thorough introduction to graphing networks with R. (You can also export the results of your analysis into a D3-friendly format.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/d3js.org\/\">D3<\/a><\/strong>, the visualization library, can produce great-looking interactive network graphs with its <a href=\"https:\/\/beta.observablehq.com\/@mbostock\/d3-force-directed-graph\">force-directed graph layout<\/a>. Hint: You can use Cytoscape to perform your calculations and then create your final graph in D3. Install the plugin <a href=\"http:\/\/apps.cytoscape.org\/apps\/d3jsexporter\">D3.js Exporter<\/a> to export your data (including all calculations) in JSON format, designed to be dropped into a D3 graph.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Follow along with our discussion using these links.
