
Our class has been invited to mount an exhibit within UCLA’s Young Research Library Special Collections, based on the George P. Johnson collection. Johnson was an important figure in the early race film industry, and the exhibit will explore Johnson’s life and his role as a filmmaker.
Based on your interest and expertise, you’ll join one of these teams:
- Curation: Primary and secondary research, selecting artifacts, organizing the digitization and procurement of artifacts, writing exhibit labels, providing text for the Online Experience team.
- Exhibit design: Designing the visitor’s experience, including consideration of layout, placement of objects and furniture, coordinating with Curation and Multimedia teams to ensure that all pieces are in place according to schedule.
- Exhibit multimedia: Responsible for all digital technology within the exhibit, including any visualizations, videos, and other media.
- Online experience: Responsible for developing an online companion to the physical exhibit.
The exhibit will open during Finals Week (March 20-24), and all elements must be in place by then. It will remain open in YRL Special Collections for approximately three months.
In addition to your work on the exhibit, your group will be responsible for preparing two reports. Your progress report, due on Feb. 22, will assemble your group’s research to date, planning documents, and timeline for completing your work.
Your group’s final report will contain an annotated bibliography, all planning documents, and a report on what each group member did.
In addition to your group report, each team member will prepare an individual reflection, detailing what he or she learned and connecting these insights to the themes and readings from the class.
