Absences
You can miss a maximum of two classes, no questions asked, before your absences impinge on your grade. Beginning with your third absence, your attendance score will be deducted by 10 points per absence. This policy is firm and is designed to allow you to absent yourself for emergencies and illness. I suggest that you reserve your absences for those occasions, although you’re welcome to use them as you wish.
Late Work
No late work is permitted.
Accessibility
In the spirit of Universal Design for Learning, I will strive to provide an environment that is equitable and conducive to achievement and learning for all students. I ask that we all be respectful of diverse opinions and of all class members, regardless of personal attribute. I encourage persons with disabilities or particular needs that impact on performance to meet with me to co-design accommodations, if necessary. I ask that we all use inclusive language in written and oral work. Students with disabilities should also register with the Office for Students with Disabilities (http://www.osd.ucla.edu).
Working in Public (or Not)
You’ll post many of your assignments for this class to the web, where they’ll be widely accessible. I like to do this because I’ve found that students often take their work more seriously if they know that others might read it. It also opens up the opportunity for dialogue with people outside of the class, and for you to share your work with others. You’re welcome to use a pseudonym or nickname if you’d like, as long as I know what it is.
However, you do not need to make your work public if you don’t want to. If you’d prefer to keep your work private, please let Prof. Posner know so that we can co-design alternative assignments.
A Note on Email
I enjoy corresponding with you, and I strive to respond to emails within 48 hours. However, I regret that I cannot answer email after 5:00 p.m. or on weekends. Please plan accordingly. This class has many moving parts, and from time to time, I’ll need to get in touch with you about assignments or due dates. Thus, I expect you to check the email account associated with your MyUCLA profile each weekday.
