The map consists of a legend and timeline that details the location and date of cholera outbreaks, hurricanes, tropical storms, and news articles. Although the map initially seems to be a good descriptor of the events, further examination shows that the map actually obscures some details. Every event listed is in the perspective of westerners. If you click on the news articles, the news sources, like the Philadelphia Inquirer, Daily National Intelligencer, and Wisconson Free Democrat, are all from the United States although the events described are Caribbean. Furthermore, the tags linked to the location of each outbreak fails to describe the event in detail: how many people died, who it affected, how long the outbreak was, etc.<\/p>\n
An alternative map that would more accurately describe the events would first of all, include more detail about each tag with sources not just from the States, but from the Caribbean itself. Another change would be the overall map itself. Even though the map is about cholera outbreaks in the Caribbean, the map is a world map. Focusing the map on just the Caribbean would make the map more centralized and relatable to the details.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
The map I choose to examine for this week’s blog post is the 19th-Century Caribbean Cholera Timemap.
