Thus, I have decided to look into “Collection of Heavy Metal Material” which consists of diverse archives from the 1960s to the present. There are a total 6 series of archive materials ranging from various printed materials (i.e. books, fanzines, show fliers) to recordings. Through detailed appreciation and examination of the raw, non-interpreted materials, one can get a clearer understanding as well as a rather neutral, non-glamorized look into heavy music.

With 6 different types of archives, I believe we can come up with a pretty rich and comprehensive historical narrative regarding heavy metal culture in the past. Books and DVDs, the most common archives, can provide a rich historical background and knowledge about heavy metal while on the other hand, show fliers can reflect the progression of heavy metal culture through the years, particularly in Los Angeles and San Francisco, in which the artwork and style of the fliers can strongly reflect the metal scene at the period.

Photographs, ephemera, and memorabilia give us even a closer narrative on the interaction and relationships between the metal bands and the fan bases as well as a closer look into the physical artifacts of a metal concert (i.e. program, posters, t-shirts). With extensive concert photographs and backstage passes combined with concert merchandises, it provides us a good look into metal concerts as time pass. Mainstream magazines and independent fanzines allow two very different important narratives. Popular magazines can reflect how the mainstream society view the heavy metal culture and through their selective features, we might also be able to tell which facet of heavy metal are well-regarded by the society. On the other hand, fanzines give us a deeper look into how metal bands are covered by their fans as well as how they are affecting the local culture on a daily/ weekly basis.

Although the entire collection provides us a comprehensive look into heavy metal, there are still a lot of gaps in between the sources that need to be filled in order to fully and accurately understand the history (even though I do not think it is possible to fill up all the gaps). For example, I believe it will be important to have some sort of regular diaries from both the artists and the fans so as to better understand their daily lives without being filtered by the media. Newspaper and radio archives are also important as to how the metal culture fits in or are excluded from the mainstream culture. Last but not least, more first-hand materials from the artists and fans can also fill in the gaps so as to avoid silencing from the mainstream media.

As a musician myself, I am interested at looking into the history of different music genre, even for the ones

[1

post-1134","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
