Google Fusion Tables is a fairly simple way to go from spreadsheet to data visualization. In this tutorial, you’ll upload a spreadsheet containing information about the University of Indiana’s Cushman Collection of photographs (which you can find at ) and use it to create a map and some charts.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Open Google fusion tables<\/h2>\n

Go to Fusion Tables, located here:\u00a0https:\/\/support.google.com\/fusiontables\/answer\/2571232?hl=en<\/a>.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Click on “Create a Fusion Table” and sign in with your Google account<\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Once you’re in, click on\u00a0Choose File<\/strong>\u00a0and then select the Cushman-Collection file. For\u00a0Separator Character<\/strong>, keep the options as they are (with\u00a0Comma<\/strong>\u00a0selected) and then click\u00a0Next<\/strong>. On the next screen, click\u00a0Next<\/strong>\u00a0again, and finally, click\u00a0Finish<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Hey, that’s kind of cool.<\/h2>\n

The next screen shows you your spreadsheet just as it was when you were looking at it in Excel \u2014 except Google has automatically pulled in thumbnail images for all the direct links to photographs.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Check out a map of locations<\/h2>\n

Click on the\u00a0Map of City and State<\/strong>\u00a0tab, but \u2014 IMPORTANT \u2014 click on “Pause Geocoding” on the window that pops up. In order to place your locations on the map, you need latitudes and longitudes. Google is trying to be helpful by retrieving these for you. But that will take a long time, and actually your spreadsheet already contains this information. So we need to inform Google of this.<\/p>\n

<\/a>On the “Location” dropdown, click “Geocoordinates”<\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

That way Google will use the latitude and longitude data you’ve already provided.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Hey, you have a map!<\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Pretty cool. You can click on each of the points to see which photo was taken there. Play with the various options to see what you get.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Share, if you want.<\/h2>\n

You can share this map if you want! Just click on the\u00a0Share<\/strong>\u00a0button and share the map the same way you’d share a Google doc. You can also embed the map on a website by clicking on\u00a0Tools<\/strong>\u00a0and then\u00a0Publish<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Make some graphs and charts.<\/h2>\n

Let’s look at some other views of the same data. Click on the red “plus” sign on the tabs menu and select\u00a0Add Chart<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Make a bar chart.<\/h2>\n

Click on the\u00a0bar chart<\/strong>\u00a0icon and for\u00a0Category<\/strong>, select\u00a0Genre 1<\/strong>. Be sure to uncheck “Value: IU Archives Number” and\u00a0do<\/em>check the\u00a0Summarize data<\/strong>\u00a0checkbox. (An easier way to create a summary bar chart is just to choose the\u00a0Summarize<\/strong>option when you’re opening a new tab \u2014 but this way we can switch among different chart types.)<\/p>\n

<\/a>Filter your data.<\/h2>\n

Fusion Tables allows you to drill down into your data by filtering it. Try adding a\u00a0City, State<\/strong>\u00a0filter.<\/p>\n
