These shows, like you said, not only make online predators more common than they actually are, but also have questionable morals when doing so. I kind of see it like a rumor spreading and eventually getting out of hand. Like I mentioned in class the other day, there were a lot of houses that my friends told me were pedophile houses. Looking back, I’m curious if they actually were and how they knew. But the only thing that really is for sure is that my friends and I avoided those houses.

Thu, 12 Feb 2015 03:29:16 +0000http://miriamposner.com/dh150w15/?p=759#comment-213I used to see episodes of “To Catch a Predator” too because my parents would because it was always on during the few hours they could watch TV at the time, and it definitely was not good for my mom’s sanity. The media was so incredibly powerful back then because it was one of the few, but easier to access outlets for news. I think the media is still just as powerful to influence us, but it’s a little bit more evened out across the internet. Anyway, my mom was definitely influenced by this show and news outlets that reported on rapings and kidnappings of young girls. It kind of reinforces this fear that all parents have in regards to “stranger danger”, and I think it made everyone think that this was happening all the time. I think that everything you mentioned in this post is true. At least, I can agree with it based off of my own experiences.
