Losh talks of the roles these online formats can have in the emotions and consequences of social media. Losh undertook research to discover the use of hashtags by activist groups in India to manage and direct a social movement around the treatment of women Link. Losh’s work on selfies regarded the effect that they can have on feminism, how they are commonly misunderstood, and the social influences selfies can have Link. […]

Comment on Week 9: Transmedia Storytelling with a Cause by abwrubel http://miriamposner.com/dh150w15/week-9-transmedia-storytelling-with-a-cause/#comment-371 Thu, 05 Mar 2015 20:26:02 +0000 http://miriamposner.com/dh150w15/?p=977#comment-371 I have some questions concerning transmedia storytelling, or the construction of transmedia online narratives. Transmedia storytelling sounds a lot like marketing or brand narratives. But since transmedia stories take place on multiple platforms, could this possibly hurt the prospect of getting more attention or viewers, by diverting attention to different channels.

Comment on Net Neutrality by abwrubel http://miriamposner.com/dh150w15/net-neutrality/#comment-370 Thu, 05 Mar 2015 20:20:09 +0000 http://miriamposner.com/dh150w15/?p=1003#comment-370 I think that as long as we exist within a capitalist system, net neutrality will never come into being in its idealized state. Products require that data is skewed, for the sake of creating a consumer base. By making this comment I’m not saying capitalism is bad, I just think that goods and capital will always be valued higher than information or knowledge.

I think we have to pull a part the idea of “Does this count?” and “Is it actually doing anything?” I think it’s important to note that online activism ranges greatly. At first, I thought of clicktivism as in sharing online petitions or the one you mentioned “i like it…(place)” for an ovarian cancer organization. However, there is also online activism as in live tweeting events like Ferguson. In any case, we have to separate these ideas to make sense of the value in online activism

Comment on Net Neutrality and the Future of the Internet by bhesslegrave http://miriamposner.com/dh150w15/net-neutrality-and-the-future-of-the-internet/#comment-368 Thu, 05 Mar 2015 20:16:38 +0000 http://miriamposner.com/dh150w15/?p=1017#comment-368 I totally agree. The original goal of the Internet was this ideal of a free form open space – where anyone could log and share ideas and resources. Even then, it wasn’t realistic – it was a military funded project with the inclusion of academics. Only academics at certain universities had access to the early Internet. It would seem that as the Internet evolved, this ideal would become clearer and clearer. But the issue of net neutrality proves a step backwards. It seems difficult to reconcile the United States’ free speech belief with what is going on with algorithmic filtering. If journalists wanted the truth from the public, it would make the most sense to turn to the Internet – a place where ideas are supposed to be shared with complete freedom. But if these ideas are blocked or filtered in anyway, how is this information getting out?

Comment on Week 9: #Crazy #About #Hashtags by frcarbonellm http://miriamposner.com/dh150w15/week-9-crazy-about-hashtags/#comment-367 Thu, 05 Mar 2015 20:04:53 +0000 http://miriamposner.com/dh150w15/?p=986#comment-367 Your very post has reminded me why Facebook added the ability to use hashtags. I remember when Twitter and Tumblr were the only sources I knew for taking advantage of hashtag resources. When Facebook first introduced the hashtag system I was confused and frustrated. I even mocked those who used hashtags on Facebook. Looking at it now, this course has helped me realize just how valuable these online tools are. Just as you had mentioned in your post, I too find out about many world events and even local events through the use of hashtags. Now It is safe to say hashtags can be greatly over used and even pointless at times but when used proactively and strategically, they make great tools.
On instagram I use hashtags when searching for other users that I am interested in. On twitter I use hashtags to find more in depth reactions to world events. Just this morning on Thursday, a plane skidded off a runway at New York LGA airport. Through hashtags on twitter I was able to find first hand encounters of the situation and see an array of photos posted by people at the scene.
I enjoyed your post, thanks for sharing.

However, I definitely had no idea what the whole outcome of it was until you brought it up in your post. I knew it was meant to create awareness, but I now realize that I didn’t see a concrete plan of action or a real result to go along with this campaign. I’m guilty of clicktivism and activism myself, but as people have said and the readings elaborate on, there must be some social organizing and actual action to go along with such a movement in order to really make change. With prominent groups, such as VSU, there really was a possibility to use this online campaign and combine it with action to really create change and they should have done a better job at doing so. I can only hope that the national and global online campaigns have this sort of concrete backing to make real impact.

Comment on Digital Activism/ #BlackOutDay March 6th by frcarbonellm http://miriamposner.com/dh150w15/digital-activism-blackoutday-march-6thth/#comment-365 Thu, 05 Mar 2015 19:57:43 +0000 http://miriamposner.com/dh150w15/?p=929#comment-365 Your post had me reflect on what I see when I look at my own #Trending topics on my social media sources. When I log onto Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr I am now flooded with trending topics “related” to my interests. What I see is an overload of shirtless men and quotes from movies such as Mean Girls and Clueless. It is this same misrepresentation provided by the mentioned algorithms that works to promote a stereotyped culture and image.
Yes I do identify as a gay man but that does not automatically mean that my Facebook should be bombarded with ads and products directed towards gay males. The same goes for Instagram on their discover/explore page where you can find other “relevant” topics and people to follow. If anything, your post has encouraged me to really reflect on how stereotypes are depicted online.
Thanks for your post, I really enjoyed reading it!

Comment on Twitter and Activism by William Lam http://miriamposner.com/dh150w15/twitter-and-activism/#comment-364 Thu, 05 Mar 2015 19:35:14 +0000 http://miriamposner.com/dh150w15/?p=1001#comment-364 I think this definitely falls in the middle ground. We’ve been discussing in class content filtering in a way that outlines it as ultimately bad, but in some cases such as this, it’s totally welcome. Now I just wonder what’s stopping Twitter and other domains from blocking other racists groups–or racists groups altogether? Content filtering in the sense of racism or even explicit content (in the way Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook have always done) doesn’t seem to be a problem, but I wonder if there are people out there who will argue that it is.
