Hard to miss me in this dress, huh?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

This is a new silhouette for me: the Seamwork Tacara dress<\/a>, which is voluminous and cocoon-shaped, with raglan (I think?) sleeves and big pockets. (My mother-in-law was kind enough to buy me a Seamwork membership, which I’ve enjoyed.) I really like the versions I’ve seen on other people, but I don’t know. Looking at pictures, it’s not…my ideal version of myself. I think perhaps it could use some hemming. I also decided to make the 18 because it was the smallest size in the larger size range (which I had to print separately), but I wonder if the 16 might be a better fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

I did lower the apex and make a narrow-shoulder adjustment. (That latter adjustment is a new one for me, which I think will help the fit of a lot of bodices.) One odd thing: I’ve never thought of myself as someone with particularly hefty forearms, but the lower part of the sleeve on this dress was a pretty tight fit, even though the rest of the dress is perhaps too big. It might be something to bear in mind if you have proportionally larger forearms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’m learning, over the years, that I am not the most reliable narrator of my own looks — I think I might have some mild version of body dysmorphia — and so I’m working on being less hard on myself. Comments from friends do help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dress is very easy and quick to make. Others have noted that the pocket instructions are a bit odd: rather than sewing on each side of the pockets and then sewing the complete side seam for both sides of the dress, the pattern has you sew on the pockets separately, cutting into the seam allowance to ensure they sit properly, before sewing up the side seams. I actually didn’t mind this, since I’ve made some really wonky-looking pockets in knit dresses and this ensured they didn’t gape. But I definitely have not seen those instructions for side-seam pockets before and they were a little faffy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the leftover fabric, I made a little outfit for Davy. He’s such a little pudge that I’ve been sewing a size 2T for him. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fabric is really nice: a chartreuse ponte from Fabric.com<\/a>. My email tells me I got it for $12.50 a yard during a sale, but it’s not much more expensive now. When I made Davy’s outfit, I noticed that the fabric quality was a lot nicer than that of a lot of children’s clothes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If nothing else, the dress is supremely comfortable, with great pockets. I may hem it a bit and perhaps take in the sides a little. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
