For today, don&#8217;t worry too much about things like controlled vocabularies and authority lists; we&#8217;ll talk about that more next week. We&#8217;ll start by adding an item.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"add-an-item-to-your-archive\">Add an item to your archive<i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/h2>\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/programminghistorian.org\/images\/up-and-running-with-omeka\/up-and-running-08.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/programminghistorian.org\/images\/up-and-running-with-omeka\/up-and-running-08.png\" alt=\"Add an item\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Add an item<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Click on\u00a0<strong>Items<\/strong>\u00a0on the left-hand menu and then (naturally!)\u00a0<strong>Add an item.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"describe-your-new-item\">Describe your new item<i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/h2>\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/programminghistorian.org\/images\/up-and-running-with-omeka\/up-and-running-09.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/programminghistorian.org\/images\/up-and-running-with-omeka\/up-and-running-09.png\" alt=\"Make your item Public using checkbox circled here\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Make your item Public using checkbox circled here<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Dublin Core<\/strong>\u00a0refers to the descriptive information you\u2019ll enter about your item. Fill out the fields as best you can. Many fields won&#8217;t apply, and you can ignore them.<\/p>\n<p>Be sure to click the\u00a0<strong>Public<\/strong>\u00a0checkbox so that your item is viewable by the general public. If you don\u2019t click that box, only people who are logged into your site will be able to see the item.<\/p>\n<p>To add multiple fields \u2014 for example, if you want to add multiple subjects for your item \u2014 use the green\u00a0<strong>Add input<\/strong>\u00a0button to the left of the text boxes.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"attach-a-file-to-your-item-record\">Attach a file to your item record<i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/h2>\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/programminghistorian.org\/images\/up-and-running-with-omeka\/up-and-running-11.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/programminghistorian.org\/images\/up-and-running-with-omeka\/up-and-running-11.png\" alt=\"Adding files to an item\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Adding files to an item<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve finished adding Dublin Core metadata, you can attach a file to your item record by clicking\u00a0<strong>Files<\/strong>\u00a0at the top of the Dublin Core form. (You don\u2019t have to click\u00a0<strong>Add Item<\/strong>\u00a0before you do this; Omeka will automatically save your information.)<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019ve added a file or files, you can add\u00a0<strong>Tags<\/strong>\u00a0by clicking on the button. You can also click on\u00a0<strong>Item Type Metadata<\/strong>\u00a0to choose the kind of thing \u2014 person, place, animal, vegetable, mineral \u2014 your item is. If you don\u2019t see the appropriate item type for your item, don\u2019t worry. We can add a new item type later.<\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019re all done, click the green\u00a0<strong>Add Item<\/strong>\u00a0button.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"you-have-an-item\">You have an item!<i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/h2>\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/programminghistorian.org\/images\/up-and-running-with-omeka\/up-and-running-12.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/programminghistorian.org\/images\/up-and-running-with-omeka\/up-and-running-12.png\" alt=\"Browse Items, Admin view\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Browse Items, Admin view<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This list contains all the items you\u2019ve added. If the item were not public, it would have (Private) after the title. To see what a user would see, click on the blue\u00a0<strong>View Public Page<\/strong>\u00a0button on the right. To do this, return to your dashboard, click on the\u00a0<strong>Collections<\/strong>\u00a0tab, and click on\u00a0<strong>Add a Collection<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"enter-information-about-your-collection\">Enter information about your collection<i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/h2>\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/programminghistorian.org\/images\/up-and-running-with-omeka\/up-and-running-16.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/programminghistorian.org\/images\/up-and-running-with-omeka\/up-and-running-16.png\" alt=\"Add collection metadata\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Add collection metadata<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In Omeka, metadata is king! Enter some information about your new collection, and remember to click on the\u00a0<strong>Public<\/strong>\u00a0button near the bottom of the page. Then save your collection.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"add-items-to-your-collection\">Add items to your collection<i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/h2>\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/programminghistorian.org\/images\/up-and-running-with-omeka\/up-and-running-17.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/programminghistorian.org\/images\/up-and-running-with-omeka\/up-and-running-17.png\" alt=\"Click the item checkbox to batch edit\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Click the item checkbox to batch edit<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>To fill up the collection you just created, click on the\u00a0<strong>Items<\/strong>\u00a0tab. From your\u00a0<strong>Browse Items<\/strong>\u00a0list, click the boxes of the items that belong in your new collection. Then click on the\u00a0<strong>Edit<\/strong>\u00a0button.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"choose-the-collection\">Choose the collection<i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/h2>\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/programminghistorian.org\/images\/up-and-running-with-omeka\/up-and-running-18.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/programminghistorian.org\/images\/up-and-running-with-omeka\/up-and-running-18.png\" alt=\"Select a collection from the dropdown\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Select a collection from the dropdown<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On the\u00a0<strong>Batch Edit Items<\/strong>\u00a0page, select the Collection you\u2019d like to add your items to. (Also, take note of all the other things you can do on this page.)<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"check-out-your-new-collection\">Check out your new collection<i class=\"fa fa-link\"><\/i><\/h2>\n<figure><a href=\"https:\/\/programminghistorian.org\/images\/up-and-running-with-omeka\/up-and-running-19.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/programminghistorian.org\/images\/up-and-running-with-omeka\/up-and-running-19.png\" alt=\"Browse collections, public view\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Browse collections, public view<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Return to your public site. If you click on the\u00a0<strong>Browse Collections<\/strong>\u00a0tab on the public-facing site, you should now have a new collection containing the items you identified.<\/p>\n<p>Now that you\u2019ve added some items and grouped them into a collection, take some time to play with your site. It\u2019s beginning to take shape now that you have both individual items and thematic units. But Omeka can do even more.
