Today, we\u2019ll edit together photos, music, video, and text to make a very short story of an event in your life.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LessonStep top\">\n<h3 class=\"StepTitle\">Get ready (1)<\/h3>\n<div class=\"StepImage\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/media_1453337232164.png\" alt=\"media_1453337232164.png\" width=\"540\" height=\"284\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"StepInstructions\">\n<p>It\u2019s easier to use iMovie if you move all your photos and videos into the Photos library. To do this, first download your photos from wherever they\u2019re currently stored. Next, open\u00a0<strong>Photos.<\/strong>\u00a0(It should be in your\u00a0<strong>Applications\u00a0<\/strong>folder.) Now, drag your photos into your\u00a0<strong>Photos<\/strong>\u00a0library.<\/p>\n<p>(A sidenote: We&#8217;re putting everything into your Photos library for the purpose of this workshop, just because it&#8217;s the easiest way to find your media quickly. But you may prefer storing your media elsewhere. That&#8217;s fine! To import it into iMovie, open iMovie and\u00a0 click on\u00a0<strong>File<\/strong>, then\u00a0<strong>Import Media<\/strong>.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LessonStep top\">\n<h3 class=\"StepTitle\">Get ready (2)<\/h3>\n<div class=\"StepImage\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/Screen_Shot_2016-01-20_at_3.36.12_PM.png\" alt=\"Screen_Shot_2016-01-20_at_3.36.12_PM.png\" width=\"540\" height=\"299\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"StepInstructions\">\n<p>We\u2019re going to add some music to our movie, so we need to pick a soundtrack! We want to look for\u00a0<strong>Creative Commons-licensed<\/strong>\u00a0songs; that is, songs that the creators have designated free to download and reuse. One good place to look for CC-licensed music is the <a href=\"http:\/\/freemusicarchive.org\/\">Free Music Archive<\/a>. Spend some time browsing the music there. Once you\u2019ve found something you like, click on the arrow to download the song. If you double-click on it, it should save in iTunes, which is where you want the file to be.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LessonStep top\">\n<h3 class=\"StepTitle\">Open iMovie<\/h3>\n<div class=\"StepImage\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/Screen_Shot_2016-01-20_at_3.14.22_PM.png\" alt=\"Screen_Shot_2016-01-20_at_3.14.22_PM.png\" width=\"540\" height=\"309\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"StepInstructions\">\n<p>Now you\u2019re ready to open iMovie! It will be in your Applications folder.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LessonStep top\">\n<h3 class=\"StepTitle\">Create a new movie<\/h3>\n<div class=\"StepImage\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/Screen_Shot_2016-01-20_at_3.16.14_PM.png\" alt=\"Screen_Shot_2016-01-20_at_3.16.14_PM.png\" width=\"540\" height=\"277\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"StepInstructions\">\n<p>Click on\u00a0<strong>Create New <\/strong>(or, from the File menu, select\u00a0<strong>New Movie<\/strong>). If the program asks you if you&#8217;d like to use a theme, say no. Themes can be kind of cool, but they also constrain your editing options, and we want to experiment with those options.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LessonStep top\">\n<h3 class=\"StepTitle\">Start adding photos to your video<\/h3>\n<div class=\"StepImage\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/Screen_Shot_2016-01-20_at_3.25.22_PM.png\" alt=\"Screen_Shot_2016-01-20_at_3.25.22_PM.png\" width=\"540\" height=\"286\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"StepInstructions\">\n<p>Here\u2019s where you\u2019ll do your editing. If you click on\u00a0<strong>Photos Library\u00a0<\/strong>on the left-hand side of the window, you should see your photos and videos. The pane in the upper right-hand corner is where you\u2019ll play your video in progress. And the bottom half of the window is where you\u2019ll do your actual editing. The vertical white line in that bottom part of the window indicates where you are in your video\u2019s playback. (Right now, of course, you don\u2019t have a video, so there\u2019s nothing to play.)<\/p>\n<p>Try dragging your photos and videos down to the bottom half of the screen, in the order that you want them to appear in your video.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LessonStep top\">\n<h3 class=\"StepTitle\">Move photos around and change their duration<\/h3>\n<div class=\"StepImage\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/Screen_Shot_2016-01-20_at_3.26.34_PM.png\" alt=\"Screen_Shot_2016-01-20_at_3.26.34_PM.png\" width=\"540\" height=\"310\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"StepInstructions\">\n<p>By default, iMovie plays your photos for 4 seconds. But you can change this by dragging the edge of your little photo-strip forward or backward. Notice that the total length of your movie changes as you do this.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LessonStep top\">\n<h3 class=\"StepTitle\">Add some music<\/h3>\n<div class=\"StepImage\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/Screen_Shot_2016-01-20_at_3.38.07_PM.png\" alt=\"Screen_Shot_2016-01-20_at_3.38.07_PM.png\" width=\"540\" height=\"279\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"StepInstructions\">\n<p>If you click on the\u00a0<strong>Audio<\/strong>\u00a0tab at the upper left of the iMovie window, you should see the song you downloaded in iTunes. Drag the song to the bottom half of the window, underneath the video you\u2019re editing. It should drop into place to become your soundtrack.<\/p>\n<p>Press\u00a0<strong>play<\/strong>\u00a0on the upper right-hand part of the window to see how your video looks and sounds now.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LessonStep top\">\n<h3 class=\"StepTitle\">Add some titles<\/h3>\n<div class=\"StepImage\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/Screen_Shot_2016-01-20_at_3.44.18_PM.png\" alt=\"Screen_Shot_2016-01-20_at_3.44.18_PM.png\" width=\"540\" height=\"275\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"StepInstructions\">\n<p>If you click on the\u00a0<strong>Titles<\/strong>\u00a0tab, you can see some options for titles. You can superimpose these over images (by slotting them above a video clip) or have them play by themselves. Change the text by double-clicking on the title.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LessonStep top\">\n<h3 class=\"StepTitle\">Edit your images<\/h3>\n<div class=\"StepImage\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/Screen_Shot_2016-01-20_at_3.39.42_PM.png\" alt=\"Screen_Shot_2016-01-20_at_3.39.42_PM.png\" width=\"540\" height=\"302\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"StepInstructions\">\n<p>By default, iMovie gives your photos a \u201cKen Burns effect,\u201d zooming and panning over them to make them look more lively. If you don\u2019t want this, or if you want to alter it, double-click on the image to change the settings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LessonStep top\">\n<h3 class=\"StepTitle\">Change your transitions<\/h3>\n<div class=\"StepImage\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/Screen_Shot_2016-01-20_at_3.59.30_PM.png\" alt=\"Screen_Shot_2016-01-20_at_3.59.30_PM.png\" width=\"540\" height=\"388\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"StepInstructions\">\n<p>If you click on the\u00a0<strong>Transitions<\/strong>\u00a0tab, you\u2019ll see some options for changing the way one image blends into the next. Drag a transition to the space between your image-clips in order to introduce a transition. Remember, the more frenetic your transition, the better your movie. (That\u2019s a joke.)<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"StepTitle\">Cut and split your video clips<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/is270w18\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2018\/01\/Screen-Shot-2018-01-29-at-12.17.33-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-110\" src=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/is270w18\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2018\/01\/Screen-Shot-2018-01-29-at-12.17.33-PM-1024x620.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"525\" height=\"318\" srcset=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/is270w18\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2018\/01\/Screen-Shot-2018-01-29-at-12.17.33-PM-1024x620.png 1024w, http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/is270w18\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2018\/01\/Screen-Shot-2018-01-29-at-12.17.33-PM-300x182.png 300w, http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/is270w18\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2018\/01\/Screen-Shot-2018-01-29-at-12.17.33-PM-768x465.png 768w, http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/is270w18\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2018\/01\/Screen-Shot-2018-01-29-at-12.17.33-PM.png 1435w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 525px) 100vw, 525px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LessonStep top\">\n<p>You can drag video clips from your Media library in the same way you did your photos. Once they&#8217;re there, you can trim your clips, break them into pieces, and move them around. To do that, right-click (or press\u00a0<strong>Control<\/strong> and then click your trackpad) and select from the menu that appears.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Splitting<\/strong> the clip breaks it into pieces, which can be reordered and rearranged.\u00a0<strong>Trim to playhead<\/strong> cuts your clip to the point indicated by the white line that represents the playhead. You can even\u00a0<strong>Detach<\/strong><strong> the audio<\/strong> from your video so that you can manipulate it separately from the clip.<\/p>\n<h3>Hint: Use the Precision Editor<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/is270w18\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2018\/01\/Screen-Shot-2018-01-29-at-12.36.18-PM.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-111 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/is270w18\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2018\/01\/Screen-Shot-2018-01-29-at-12.36.18-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"416\" height=\"374\" srcset=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/is270w18\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2018\/01\/Screen-Shot-2018-01-29-at-12.36.18-PM.png 416w, http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/is270w18\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/8\/2018\/01\/Screen-Shot-2018-01-29-at-12.36.18-PM-300x270.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 416px) 100vw, 416px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you want to fine-tune the beginning or end of a video or photo, you can use the Precision Editor to work carefully with it. Double-click the edge of a clip and the Precision Editor will appear in a layer at the top of your timeline. It shows you, dimmed in gray, the parts of your clip that you&#8217;ve cut. You can move the white edit line in the center of the editor to change the beginning or end of your clip. When you&#8217;re done, click\u00a0<strong>Close<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"StepTitle\">Save and share your movie<\/h3>\n<div class=\"StepImage\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/Screen_Shot_2016-01-20_at_4.01.02_PM.png\" alt=\"Screen_Shot_2016-01-20_at_4.01.02_PM.png\" width=\"540\" height=\"455\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"StepInstructions\">\n<p>To save your video file, click on\u00a0<strong>File<\/strong>\u00a0and then\u00a0<strong>Share<\/strong>. You\u2019ll see that you can save your video in various ways. The most straightforward way is to save it as a file. Be sure to give the file time to finish downloading (it can take a few minutes), and unclick the\u00a0<strong>Theater\u00a0<\/strong>sharing checkbox \u2014 that\u2019s an Apple thing that doesn\u2019t really apply to you.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LessonStep top\">\n<h3 class=\"StepTitle\">Upload your video (if you want)<\/h3>\n<div class=\"StepImage\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/Screen_Shot_2016-01-20_at_4.05.28_PM.png\" alt=\"Screen_Shot_2016-01-20_at_4.05.28_PM.png\" width=\"540\" height=\"338\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"StepInstructions\">\n<p>If you want to put your video somewher other people can see it, you\u2019ll need to upload it to a video-streaming service, like YouTube or Vimeo. You can probably figure out how to do this yourself, but my favorite place to upload videos is the Internet Archive, since unlike some other options, it\u2019s a nonprofit archive, not a for-profit business. It\u2019s pretty easy to upload videos to the Internet Archive \u2014 just click on\u00a0<strong>Upload<\/strong>, create an account, and upload your video.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LessonStep top\">\n<h3 class=\"StepTitle\">Give your video a license<\/h3>\n<div class=\"StepImage\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/Screen_Shot_2016-01-20_at_4.06.46_PM.png\" alt=\"Screen_Shot_2016-01-20_at_4.06.46_PM.png\" width=\"540\" height=\"473\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"StepInstructions\">\n<p>Now that you\u2019re a filmmaker, you can give your video a Creative Commons license, too!
