ATTENDANCE<\/strong>
\nWe have so few meetings with each other that it’s really not a good idea to miss class. I do know that life happens and things come up! So for the entire quarter, you have one excused absence, no questions asked and no explanation necessary. You can use that time however you’d like, but bear in mind that for each subsequent absence, your total grade in the class will be docked 5 points. So I would recommend saving that excused absence for when you really need it, such as in case of illness.<\/p>\n

A NOTE ON EMAIL<\/strong>
\nI enjoy corresponding with you and encourage you to get in touch with me early and often with your questions. I strive to respond to emails within 48 hours of receipt. I cannot, however, respond to emails in the evening or on weekends. Please take note of these tips<\/a> on emailing a professor. In turn, I will extend the same respect to you. I mention this because we’re all human, and sometimes, especially when under stress, we can forget to be aware of each other’s feelings. Etiquette is one way to be sure we treat each other with generosity and respect.<\/p>\n

A FLEXIBLE SYLLABUS<\/strong>
\nNo matter how hard one tries to anticipate every eventuality, things can change (sometimes a lot!) over the course of 10 weeks. An assignment may not work, for example, or readings may not resonate. Because of this, I want you to be aware that the syllabus is not set in stone. I promise to make you aware of changes with plenty of warning, and to be receptive to your concerns.<\/p>\n

PARTICIPATION<\/strong>
\nPart of the reason we divided this class into two sections is so that you’ll have a chance to speak and work with each other. Discussions are not role-plays that I orchestrate; they are the primary means by which we create a shared understanding of the issues at hand. I know that not everyone is an extrovert, but, even if you don’t usually speak up in class, I ask you to stretch your comfort zone and get used to the sound of your own voice. Likewise, if you tend to talk a lot, you might give some thought to how you can exert some of that energy encouraging less-vocal students to share. For example, you might try soliciting others’ opinions, practicing active listening, and supporting shy classmates’ participation. It’s good for the class, and it’s also a great professional skill!<\/p>\n

ACCESSIBILITY<\/strong>
\nIn the spirit of Universal Design for Learning, I will strive to provide an environment that is equitable and conducive to achievement and learning for all students. I ask that we all be respectful of diverse opinions and of all class members, regardless of personal attribute.
