The museum and its concept are extremely interesting and I was excited to see how people interacted with the pieces within the museum. The Museum of Broken Relationships explores love and other human relationships through objects and stories anonymously donated from all over the world. Each display contains an object, from small scraps of paper to larger items such as guitars or tapestries. Accompanied with each object is a note, and these range from short sentences to longer narratives or even poems. The exhibits are made to represent the entire spectrum of human emotion, and I could definitely feel the powerful emotions behind the words that I was reading as I walked from piece to piece.

There were a good number of visitors when we visited the museum on Friday afternoon. While the museum itself doesn’t utilize any technology except for Square for ticket payment, many of the visitors used their phones to take pictures or notes of the displays. There was one young woman who took pictures of multiple pieces, and I also watched an older gentleman taking notes on his phone of one piece that he was reading.

The exhibits are very simply displayed, usually in open cases or glass shelves on the walls. The Museum of Broken Relationships had a very clean, minimalist style, but on most walls there were small signs advertising their social media networks. The Museum of Broken Relationships is very active online, with not only a website but also social networking sites including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Tumblr. They even have their own hashtag! (#Brokenships) I looked at a couple of their sites and most are updated daily, especially the Instagram page which posts everyday. One of the pieces in the museum is a large mirror with crossed out prices written in large letters. The mirror has become a staple in many of the photos on the museum’s Instagram, with different people posing in front of it and a quote from each person.

The Museum of Broken Relationships is an extremely interesting space that showcases small pieces of people’s lives in a thoughtful and emotional way. Many of the people who submitted objects stated that they did so because they did not want them anymore, but couldn’t bear to throw them away or sell them. The museum serves as a way to save and share important memories, both happy and sad. They have really good branding with their brokenships logo, and daily updates on social media help the museum stay active and push people to attend the physical museum. Hopefully we can incorporate these things within our exhibit with the social media team!

Last week, Jenny and I visited the Museum of Broken Relationships in Hollywood.
