{"id":747,"date":"2017-02-15T17:45:47","date_gmt":"2017-02-15T17:45:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w17\/?p=747"},"modified":"2017-02-15T17:45:47","modified_gmt":"2017-02-15T17:45:47","slug":"shooting-wallpaper-digital-projection-at-lacma","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w17\/2017\/02\/15\/shooting-wallpaper-digital-projection-at-lacma\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Shooting Wallpaper&#8221; Digital Projection at LACMA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When I went to LACMA, there was a digital wallpaper projected on a wall on the third floor of the Hammer Building.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Titled, <a href=\"https:\/\/collections.lacma.org\/node\/2110963\">&#8220;Shooting Wallpaper&#8221;<\/a>, it was an animated film, with sound, looping every few minutes.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It depicted a white and pink floral, country pattern with a young girl sitting in nature.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Every so often, she would stand, walk towards the viewer, imitate shooting at the viewer&#8217;s direction several times with her hand (multiple gunshot sounds would be heard), and then sort of meander her way back to sit in her original position.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-751\" src=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w17\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-15-at-9.12.14-AM-300x221.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"444\" height=\"327\" srcset=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w17\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-15-at-9.12.14-AM-300x221.png 300w, http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w17\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-15-at-9.12.14-AM.png 549w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 444px) 100vw, 444px\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-752\" src=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w17\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-15-at-9.12.04-AM-245x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"266\" height=\"326\" srcset=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w17\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-15-at-9.12.04-AM-245x300.png 245w, http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w17\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/02\/Screen-Shot-2017-02-15-at-9.12.04-AM.png 499w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 266px) 100vw, 266px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">(Photos from LACMA Collections site)<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Since the digital display was so large, and made noise, a good number of visitors congregated around it to see what was happening.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Most people stayed, watched it for a few minutes, and then carried on looking around the rest of the exhibition (which did not contain any other technology).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Most of the kids that walked by were entranced by the screen, and called out to their parents to come and look.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A few more curious viewers actually walked closer to the screen to read the description (photo included in this blog).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There was also a piece of art that was similar to the pattern depicted in the digital wallpaper, on the right wall-side of the projection.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Most viewers just walked passed this.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I think because that art piece was similar, but not exactly the same as what was digitized in the projection, it was often ignored.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Visitors probably didn&#8217;t realize that the two were meant to complement each other. While I was observing, I also noticed most people spent more time looking at visuals, art pieces, and artifacts, while using the text to supplement what they were seeing.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Although this is slightly intuitive, it is interesting to note because it also explains what people will likely pay attention to when it comes to digital technology in museums.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-750\" src=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w17\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/02\/IMG_0595-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"539\" height=\"404\" srcset=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w17\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/02\/IMG_0595-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w17\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/02\/IMG_0595-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w17\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/02\/IMG_0595-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 539px) 100vw, 539px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When I observed the &#8220;Shooting Wallpaper&#8221;, I watched it repeat several times.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It was definitely an eye-catching, interesting piece.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I personally felt that it was a bit out of place, though, because it was more attention-grabbing than informative.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It also seemed a bit strange to put something using such modern technology in a room of older artifacts.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>I was actually more confused <i>after<\/i> watching it, than before.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In this case, the museum&#8217;s use of technology was interesting, but I was not a huge fan of it. It just seemed difficult to connect the dots from a moving wallpaper back to the art that inspired it.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Did the artist, Brigitte Zieger, just make one still of the art, and then it was animated in 2006? Where was the connection between the artists&#8217; original intent and message, and how it was animated years later?
