This weekend I visited the Hammer Museum. While there were a few exhibitions on display, I decided to focus on Simon Denny’s project based on blockchain technology. The only “technological” piece of the exhibition was the video that was on display outside the room of the exhibition. The video was a narration of someone explaining what blockchain technology was and the implications for the future. I noticed that mostly everyone, including myself, walked into the room with the exhibition first before watching the video that was on display because it was farther from the entrance of the museum. When I watched the video, I did not know when it started or ended so I only partially paid attention and proceeded to read the large articles that were also on display. As I sat down and observed others, I noticed they too would be intrigued by the video but for only a short period because they either had not started the video from the beginning or became disinterested. The articles that followed the video were largely on display and myself and others opted to read those instead of watching the whole video because it was much easier to move in chronological order. Some people disregarded\u00a0the video in total because they had already come out of the exhibition and had no more interest in the display.<\/p>\n

However, what I found more intriguing and important was the content of the exhibition. Denny’s play on this technological banking industry takeover was compelling to me as it was the first time I personally had seen such a concept represented in visual art. Blockchain technology is the concept of an open online database that does not need the facilitation of third parties (such as banks). \u00a0Denny created sculptures for possible companies that would promote this industry. These sculptures represent booths at a tech fair and include cutouts of the heads of three different companies that are trying to promote their mission statements to the “audience.” \u00a0Each booth also has personalized large game board set up, mimicking Monopoly, representing what the world would be like if either company were able to revolutionize the banking industry. After going through the exhibit and reading most of the text that described it, I could not help but to imagine what would life be like if something like this actually happens. It made me think of how much technology is going to continue to change the future and whether it was a good or bad thing. This intersection between art and technology was not direct here as there were no significant digital components to the exhibition itself; however, the message the piece reveals about our futures in the digital age was incredibly thought provoking.<\/p>\n
