I immediately notice that the Brighton Museum website looks and navigates very differently compared to most museum websites. It has a brightly colored background, large print and very straightforward text. Having also visited the museum this past summer, I would also believe that they did not provide a museum map because of the layout of the museum. There are several floors and levels that may have also been confusing for guests to look and try to navigate around. As I searched and searched for a museum map, I realized that the website designers decided not to include a map for visitors but instead include different pages for the visitors to explore their temporary galleries and permanent collections under the Exhibitions and Displays tab at the top (image below).

This was an interesting and visually appealing way of categorizing the items that they had at their museum while also making everything much more accessible without spatially confining the objects in a plan on their website. Instead, it invited people to explore their site and go to the museum which almost seem to “free the objects” from physical space and let them be viewed and interpreted by the categories they were placed in. The categories included: Photo-punk, The Great Bear, Experimental Motion: the art of film innovation, Fine Art, Exploring Brighton, Ancient Egypt, Fashion & Style, 20th Century Art & Design, Willett’s Popular Pottery, LGBTQ Museum Trail, and many more. The way that they categorized its object and the way in which they display their mission is one that is very straightforward and to the point. They group items together by what they immediately are or the most obvious ways of categorizing the items in their narrative (if there is one). World Stories: Young Voices is a gallery attempts to bring an even more blunt way of incorporating world viewpoints and contemporary issues. The gallery aims to provide: “These narratives demonstrate how culture defines who we are and helps to connect yesterday to today, yet is always changing and adapting.” I believe they do this, to provide narratives to the objects that they have collected and also to give accessibility to a museum. It no longer becomes a place for elites, scholars or historians but instead tells people what they are looking at and what they should expect to see when they visit.
I would argue that this museum categorizes its items differently from most museums. It categorizes its items by period, place, item, but primarily by association and the narrative that they wish to share with the public. It provides a mix of ways of categorizing objects which shows their eclectic views and collections from around the world. Because this is a local museum, I would alternatively categorize items based around how it may be related to the city of Brighton and its place in a greater global context. However, this may be difficult because it may be open to too much interpretation.

The Brighton Museum & Art Gallery in Brighton and Hove, UK is a small museum that prides itself on bringing

[1

post-353","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
