{"id":207,"date":"2016-01-12T12:11:24","date_gmt":"2016-01-12T20:11:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w16\/?p=207"},"modified":"2016-01-12T12:11:24","modified_gmt":"2016-01-12T20:11:24","slug":"week-2-lacmas-south-asian-gallery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w16\/2016\/01\/12\/week-2-lacmas-south-asian-gallery\/","title":{"rendered":"Week 2: LACMA&#8217;s South Asian gallery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In \u201cThe Exhibitionary Complex,\u201d Bennett describes the role museums played early in their inception as places though which perception is manipulated and the public, in a sense, controlled through them.\u00a0 Greenblatt presents resonance and wonder which are tools, really, through which the museum is able to influence the audience\u2019s perception of the objects.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lacma.org\/art\/collection\/south-and-southeast-asian-art\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-208 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/ssea_reinstallation_20110106-vw006-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"ssea_reinstallation_20110106-vw006\" width=\"380\" height=\"252\" srcset=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/ssea_reinstallation_20110106-vw006-300x199.jpg 300w, http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/ssea_reinstallation_20110106-vw006.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 380px) 85vw, 380px\" \/><\/a>Greenblatt\u2019s definition of resonance and wonder are part of the museum effect, how an object, by simply being placed inside the museum, is elevated from being an object of function and d\u00e9cor to being seen as a fine piece of art.\u00a0 Resonance and the cherishing of objects for the cultural history they carry is part of this effect.\u00a0 Wonder also plays into this.\u00a0 Greenblatt\u2019s description of \u201cboutique lighting\u201d can be seen in <a href=\"http:\/\/seasian.catalog.lacma.org\/#toc\/s-85\">LACMA\u2019s South Asian and South East Asian galleries<\/a> where works have been arranged within a dark room with their own, individual spotlights.<\/p>\n<p>The effects of this curating are double sided.\u00a0 While the object focus elevates the works and causes wonder or admiration for the skill and beauty, the cultures of origin are being isolated from the viewer.\u00a0 The dark walls and light create such \u201cawe\u201d that the works begin to feel other worldly.\u00a0 The works are being admired and praised out of our admiration of their aesthetic beauty and we are not given any knowledge or understanding of the culture that produced them.<\/p>\n<p>I would argue that these galleries do not contextualize and justly historicize the works they present as there is little didactic information attached to them.\u00a0 In essence, there is so much wonder created that the viewer is not able to place the work in a cultural context and resonate with them.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In \u201cThe Exhibitionary Complex,\u201d Bennett describes the role museums played early in their inception as places though which perception is manipulated and the public, in a sense, controlled through them.\u00a0 &hellip;
