You import a spreadsheet into your &#8220;Silk,&#8221; visualize it in various ways, and then hit &#8220;Publish&#8221; to create a website. One nice thing about Silk is that your viewers can play with the visualizations, too; Silk allows them to filter and manipulate the data themselves.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll try out Silk today to see if we like it. Start by opening up the browser of your choice, like Safari, Firefox, or Chrome. It&#8217;s easiest if you open up two browser windows: one for these instructions and one for Silk. That way you can look at both at the same time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LessonStep top\">\n<h3 class=\"StepTitle\">Sign up for a Silk account<\/h3>\n<div class=\"StepImage\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/media_1453157158864.png\" alt=\"media_1453157158864.png\" width=\"540\" height=\"400\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"StepInstructions\">\n<p>Go to www.silk.co and fill in the information. You can call your silk whatever you&#8217;d like.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LessonStep top\">\n<h3 class=\"StepTitle\">Get the Google Spreadsheet URL<\/h3>\n<div class=\"StepImage\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/media_1453230628896.png\" alt=\"media_1453230628896.png\" width=\"540\" height=\"444\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"StepInstructions\">\n<p>For convenience, I&#8217;ve shortened the URL to the Google spreadsheet we&#8217;ll use, but Silk won&#8217;t accept that shortened URL. Instead, open a new tab in your browser and type in <strong>http:\/\/bit.ly\/powerhouseanimals<\/strong>. Once the Google spreadsheet opens in that tab, copy the URL from the address bar.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LessonStep top\">\n<h3 class=\"StepTitle\">Link to your Google spreadsheet<\/h3>\n<div class=\"StepImage\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/media_1453162774025.png\" alt=\"media_1453162774025.png\" width=\"540\" height=\"324\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"StepInstructions\">\n<p>Click on <strong>Google Spreadsheet<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>paste<\/strong> in the URL you just copied.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LessonStep top\">\n<h3 class=\"StepTitle\">Give Silk some info about your data<\/h3>\n<div class=\"StepImage\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/media_1453228858948.png\" alt=\"media_1453228858948.png\" width=\"540\" height=\"419\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"StepInstructions\">\n<p>To make your data a little easier to read, click on the little pencil at the far right side of the top line (labeled <strong>Collection<\/strong>) and rename the collection <strong>Animals<\/strong>. For <strong>Datacard title<\/strong>, choose <strong>Object Title<\/strong>, since that&#8217;s a little more meaningful than <strong>Record ID<\/strong>. When you&#8217;re satisfied, click on <strong>Start Import<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LessonStep top\">\n<h3 class=\"StepTitle\">Explore your datacards<\/h3>\n<div class=\"StepImage\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/media_1453228971878.png\" alt=\"media_1453228971878.png\" width=\"540\" height=\"303\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"StepInstructions\">\n<p>Each card represents a row in the spreadsheet. If you want, you can filter your datacards by clicking on <strong>Add Inline Filter<\/strong> and choosing a category like <strong>Type of Animal<\/strong> or <strong>Produced<\/strong>. (To get rid of a filter, just click the tiny <strong>X<\/strong>.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LessonStep top\">\n<h3 class=\"StepTitle\">Make a mosaic<\/h3>\n<div class=\"StepImage\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/media_1453229134187.png\" alt=\"media_1453229134187.png\" width=\"540\" height=\"472\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"StepInstructions\">\n<p>If you click on the<strong> Mosaic <\/strong>button on the top of the page, Silk will display only the images from your datacards. You can filter the animals in the same way you did earlier.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LessonStep top\">\n<h3 class=\"StepTitle\">Publish your mosaic<\/h3>\n<div class=\"StepImage\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/media_1453229416395.png\" alt=\"media_1453229416395.png\" width=\"540\" height=\"501\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"StepInstructions\">\n<p>Every time you create a visualization with Silk, you can publish it to a public page by clicking <strong>Publish<\/strong>. Once you do, Silk will take you to an editing view of your public page. There, you can give your visualization a new title and edit it. You can even embed a visualization on another web page, by clicking <strong>Share &amp; Embed<\/strong>. To get back to creating visualizations, click on <strong>Explore<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LessonStep top\">\n<h3 class=\"StepTitle\">Create a map<\/h3>\n<div class=\"StepImage\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/media_1453229586584.png\" alt=\"media_1453229586584.png\" width=\"540\" height=\"402\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"StepInstructions\">\n<p>On the <strong>Explore<\/strong> pane, click on the <strong>Map<\/strong> button. From the dropdown menu underneath <strong>Location<\/strong>, choose <strong>Produced<\/strong> (because that&#8217;s the best location info we have). Silk should automatically map your data.<\/p>\n<p>If you want to be extra-fancy, choose a value under the <strong>Color by <\/strong>dropdown menu. Again, you can publish your map if you&#8217;d like.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LessonStep top\">\n<h3 class=\"StepTitle\">Group the animals<\/h3>\n<div class=\"StepImage\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/media_1453229651579.png\" alt=\"media_1453229651579.png\" width=\"540\" height=\"434\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"StepInstructions\">\n<p>Click on <strong>Groups<\/strong> and then <strong>Type of Animal<\/strong> to put your animals in groups. You can try other groupings, too, like <strong>Date <\/strong>and <strong>Produced<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LessonStep top\">\n<h3 class=\"StepTitle\">Make a pie chart that shows your groups<\/h3>\n<div class=\"StepImage\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/media_1453229664746.png\" alt=\"media_1453229664746.png\" width=\"540\" height=\"389\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"StepInstructions\">\n<p>Click on the <strong>Pie<\/strong> button to visualize your groups.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LessonStep top\">\n<h3 class=\"StepTitle\">Filter those groups by country<\/h3>\n<div class=\"StepImage\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/media_1453164502721.png\" alt=\"media_1453164502721.png\" width=\"540\" height=\"439\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"StepInstructions\">\n<p>Click on <strong>Add inline filter<\/strong> and select <strong>Produced<\/strong> from the dropdown menu. Then choose a country. The pie chart will be redrawn, showing only the animals from that country.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LessonStep top\">\n<h3 class=\"StepTitle\">Switch from a pie chart to a bar chart<\/h3>\n<div class=\"StepImage\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/media_1453164549868.png\" alt=\"media_1453164549868.png\" width=\"540\" height=\"383\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"StepInstructions\">\n<p>Leave the options as they are, except click on <strong>Bars <\/strong>at the top of the page. The graph will be redrawn as a bar chart.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"LessonStep top\">\n<h3 class=\"StepTitle\">Now you try<\/h3>\n<div class=\"StepImage\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh150w16\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2016\/01\/media_1453230206184.png\" alt=\"media_1453230206184.png\" width=\"540\" height=\"386\" \/><\/div>\n<div class=\"StepInstructions\">\n<p>Produce the following visualizations and publish them to your Silk homepage:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>A pie chart that shows the countries in which the dog figurines were produced.<\/li>\n<li>A bar chart that shows the materials the animals were made out of.<\/li>\n<li>A scatterplot that shows you height versus width for all the animals. Which animal is unusually tall and thin?<\/li>\n<li>A scatterplot that shows you the height versus width for all the animals produced in Australia.<\/li>\n<li>A map that shows you where all the cows came from.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Give your Silk homepage a new name and try to accomplish the following tasks:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Can figure out how to embed a video on your Silk homepage?<\/li>\n<li>How about a file?<\/li>\n<li>Can you figure out how to change the order of the sections on your Silk homepage?<\/li>\n<li>Can you figure out how to write a paragraph of text introducing your page?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- End ScreenSteps Content --><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Silk is a newish data-visualization platform that combines visualization with web-publishing.
