Specifically I am choosing the Cover Averages project within this Digital Humanities display.

I would not change the Sources of this project, as the basic premise of the project relies upon the sources it uses, namely vogue covers across the past century. The processing of these sources, as well as the presentation both could be changed to accomplish the goal of the project in a more interactive and stimulating way.

The goal of this specific project, Cover Averages, was to provide perspective on how the covers of Vogue have changed throughout the past century, as well as highlight the similarities.

To begin the process of reverse engineering, we must first define the original project through the three main components of a digital humanities project. The Sources used in the project, The data processing methods utilized, and the presentation of this processed information.

The sources in this project were the covers of vogue throughout the past century.

The processing used in this project was technically rudimentary, hand aligning the static components of the covers in the presentations and assigning a mean RGB value to each pixel in a decennial layout, averaging every ten years of covers over the past 100 years.

The Presentation can be seen in the following picture.

A basic timeline of the decades followed by an explanation of methods and an expounding of various findings. The page ends in a declaration of a declining variability and originality in the covers of vogue from the time of the 40s and 50s to the time of the 80s and 90s.

In my reverse engineering, for presentation I would first have used a dynamic viewing system, which morphed from one decade to the next, showing year by year, not decade by decade. For processing, instead of hand aligning, I would have taken pictures and used facial recognition software to map the faces (when there were faces) by features, nose, mouth, eye color, facial shape. I would present this in a method that allows the user to explore how the idea of beauty has changed throughout vogue, looking at eye width, nose shape, chin shape and other qualities. The presentation should be more interactive and quantifiable.

I would end the with the ability to quantify the findings, allowing the user to choose if they would like to quantify the average nose width (or other such attributes) across the decades. This would be a fascinating project which would show if there are timeless aspects to “beauty.”

The project I am choosing to reverse engineer is Robots Reading Vogue, pictured above with a link to the project.
