{"id":763,"date":"2017-10-09T12:40:16","date_gmt":"2017-10-09T19:40:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh101f17\/?p=763"},"modified":"2017-10-09T12:40:16","modified_gmt":"2017-10-09T19:40:16","slug":"reverse-engineer-robots-reading-vogue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh101f17\/2017\/10\/09\/reverse-engineer-robots-reading-vogue\/","title":{"rendered":"Reverse Engineer: Robots Reading Vogue"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"http:\/\/dh.library.yale.edu\/projects\/vogue\/\">&#8220;Robots Reading Vogue&#8221; <\/a>is a joint project conducted by both Lindsay King and Peter Leonard. \u00a0This archive consists of a large collection of digitalized Vogue content which individuals utilize to explore topics such as gender studies. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sources:\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The &#8220;Robots Reading Vogue&#8221; project consists of the Vogue Archive \u00a0which was launched by ProQuest and Conde Nast in 2011. The archive consists of 27,000 covers, 400,000 pages, and 6 TB of data.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Processing:\u00a0<\/strong>Individuals\u00a0utilized various processing techniques in order to categorize and analyze the data sets.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-789 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh101f17\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2017\/10\/Screen-Shot-2017-10-09-at-12.35.13-PM-300x140.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"596\" height=\"278\" srcset=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh101f17\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2017\/10\/Screen-Shot-2017-10-09-at-12.35.13-PM-300x140.png 300w, http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh101f17\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2017\/10\/Screen-Shot-2017-10-09-at-12.35.13-PM-768x359.png 768w, http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh101f17\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2017\/10\/Screen-Shot-2017-10-09-at-12.35.13-PM-1024x479.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 596px) 100vw, 596px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Individuals use an n-gram search in order to search and compare word usage in all of the texts in the database. \u00a0For example, (as shown above) the words &#8220;lovely&#8221; and &#8220;sexy&#8221; have been used in 440k texts.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, s<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">lice histograms are used to process archival Vogue content. Slice histograms divide all of the images in a dataset into various colors. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Also, in order to process the large archive of Vogue content, computer program clustered words for the topics on each page. For example, &#8220;travel words&#8221; such as beach, house, city and town were clustered together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Another way that individuals have processed the Vogue Archive is by sorting the magazine advertisements by frequency, date and industry. For example, in 1990, 0.50 ads per issue were for Maybelline Co.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Presentation: <\/strong>Vogue Archive material is presented on such diagrams as slice histograms,\u00a0<\/span>color metric spaces, and topic models.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-777 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh101f17\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2017\/10\/Screen-Shot-2017-10-09-at-12.29.30-PM-300x187.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"417\" height=\"260\" srcset=\"http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh101f17\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2017\/10\/Screen-Shot-2017-10-09-at-12.29.30-PM-300x187.png 300w, http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh101f17\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2017\/10\/Screen-Shot-2017-10-09-at-12.29.30-PM-768x478.png 768w, http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh101f17\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2017\/10\/Screen-Shot-2017-10-09-at-12.29.30-PM-1024x637.png 1024w, http:\/\/miriamposner.com\/classes\/dh101f17\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2017\/10\/Screen-Shot-2017-10-09-at-12.29.30-PM.png 1162w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 417px) 100vw, 417px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"http:\/\/dh.library.yale.edu\/projects\/vogue\/coveraverages\/\">Averaging Covers in Vogue<\/a>, covers in magazines were collected from each year and manually overlaid on one another<b>\u00a0<\/b>(as shown above).<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In addition, many Yale students have utilized this database to create projects in order to answer questions pertaining to such topics as gender studies. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For example, Christiana Wong created a project titled &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">An Analysis of Vogue Fashion Photography&#8217;s Implications about the Female Face.&#8221; She processed 849,167 images from the Vogue Archive.
