The map visualizes data from 18th to 19th century London. The data in the map consists of records of crime, poor relief, taxation, elections, plague deaths, local administration and archaeological findings.

John Rocque’s map is a bit confusing and would definitely only be understand by more educated individuals who were both able to read as well as understand maps. The site allows the user to jump between viewing the 1746 map to the 1869-1890 map and the modern google map, revealing how the landscape of London has changed over time. The older maps are more difficult to understand because they are black and white and therefore difficult to read. It is hard to differentiate between streets, open land, and landmarks. The modern map is definitely the most useful and easily navigable. Visually, it is easy to recognize streets, buildings, parks, etc. In addition, icons are used to indicate specific buildings. For example, a library book icon is used for the Maughan Library. The map also allows the individual to click on such landmarks and an address is provided. All of the maps reveal a visual landscape of London, including streets, buildings, landmarks, etc. The limitations of these maps is that they are non-virtual. Therefore, individuals are unable to truly see how the city has visually changed. For example, how has the overall aesthetic of the city changed? Also, how has the structures of buildings changed? In addition, the map obscures details such as who lives in the cities, the economics of the city, and the demographic composition of each neighborhood.

An alternative map would be more of a virtual satellite view of the city. It would also be more interactive and detailed, consisting of not only buildings, streets, and other landmarks but also socioeconomic data. In addition, the map would allow the viewer to visual the 1746 map directly under the modern map, in order to see how the city has changed.

I chose to look at Locating London’s Past.
