The map shows where Black Harlem was concentrated during different years. The area was relatively small in 1920 and kept growing throughout the years. In 1930, Black Harlem encompassed pretty much everything North of Central Park and everything South of Washington Heights. It was a big piece of Harlem. The map also shows areas where churches, sports, arrests, and the nightlife were located. There is also one tab for events that happened in January of 1925. I think the only reason this tab was included was to show a snapshot of activity in the middle of the century. There was also a lot of growth in Black Harlem from 1925 to 1930. The area almost tripled in size in those five years.

Turnbill describes how maps can be selective, perspectival, and subjective. This means that maps don’t accurately represent the area they are showing. There is always some sort of bias whether it be from a different culture or person that is designing the map. The point of view my map reflects seems to be that of an outsider. Somebody who was researching the culture and life of Black Harlem because otherwise I’m not sure why arrests would need to be included in the map. In my opinion, there seems to be a lot of assumptions made about Black Harlem just based off of the separate tabs that are available to the side of the map. Churches, sports, arrests, and nightlife. There is nothing in there about schools or work. I think the people who made this map saw Black Harlem in only one way, as a reckless and dangerous area where all they did was go to church and go out at night. I think it’s a big issue that work and school were left out. The people who lived in this area did more with their lives but were put into a box that fit the mapmaker stereotypes.

If I were to make an alternate map, I would include work and school and make black owned businesses a tab on its own. If we’re going to fully research the lives of ordinary African American New Yorkers, then it is in everyone’s interest to include EVERY aspect of their life and not just the ones that we think were most central to them.

For this blog, I chose to focus on the Digital Harlem mapping project.
