When you look at the main page of the site, there is John Rocque’s 1746 version of the map. When you click the yellow person icon, it allows you to interactively navigate through a google maps version of modern London. The main page includes two tabs, one for the maps and the other for the data. I think this was a good way of separating the information for users to compare the two together. This site includes digital resources that lets you explore early modern and eighteenth-century London and maps out a fully GIS compliant version of John Rocque’s 1746 map. The historical background of this project includes records of crime, poor relief, taxation, elections, local administration, plague deaths and archaeological finds that can easily be mapped and searched on this site. One of the main features included in this site is that it allows you to relate an eighteenth-century representation of the metropolis to the first accurate OS map of London (1869-80), and to a modern Google Maps environment. What makes this project so interesting is that you can map out the events mentioned in the data set and get a visual of what occurred.<\/p>\n
While the project includes useful mapping visualization tools that relay the information given in the data, some viewers may find it difficult to fully understand the historical data if they don’t already have a basic understanding of London’s history. Since the website simply lists theses events and provides the mapping visualizations, users may only get a surface understanding of London’s past historical events. This is useful for people who are already with London’s history and who want to get a visual of the places where these events occurred. Therefore the information would be able to be relayed to only a small group of people because of the historical barrier. Adding explanations to these events might provide users with a better understanding the history of London’s past and make the data on the site easier to understand. For example adding descriptions of the specific social and political events when navigating through the map would be a good way to relay the information to more people and give those with less historical understanding of London a more condensed version of London’s historical past. Including descriptive features I believe would be beneficial for the overall understanding of the connection of the historical data to the map and give people an understanding of the mapping visual features.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
The DH mapping project I chose to analyze for this weeks post is the Locating London’s past project.
