This digital project presents a story map in which connects places to narratives, from the formation of ghetto to the end of the ghetto. It uses more than 200 sources from memoirs, archives, documents, and photographs to create this story map. The website is very easy to navigate where it asks you to choose a story from several topics that explore the different aspects of life in the Vilnius Ghetto. Once you click on the story, a description of the event, accompanied by an image gallery pops up to provide a basic information of the narrative. Then, once you click on “continue to Map”, the story is split into different dates that point to important events. There is a function where you can “play” these events that make up that story like a slideshow.

In Maps are territories, Turnbull explains that maps not only provide the audience with knowledge, but also allow the audience to analyze the mapmaker’s point of view. This map is most likely created by someone with prior knowledge of this event and has a clear sense of what goes on in the narrative. Personally, I think the concept of creating story maps for an event is very interesting. However, there are many improvements that can be done in regards to the presentation of the project. For example, the proportion of the image and the description is much smaller than the map itself, which is hard to read and see when I’m navigating through the website. I would suggest having a more interactive interface where the audience can click the location points on the map for the description and the images to show up. Moreover, the play button function is not as useful as it could be, mostly due to the inefficient zoom tool. Sometimes the street names disappear when it zooms in on different locations. In addition to fixing the zoom tool, I would suggest giving more time for each event so that the audience can actually read what’s going on. It would also be helpful, at least for me, to provide a general background of what this project is on the Home page. For me, I have never learned about the Vilnius ghetto so I was a bit lost in the beginning. The map obscures any details of the streets and buildings. The image gallery provides not enough information as to the geographical location. I think it would be very interesting to compare the Vilnius ghetto to other ghettos in Europe to give a bit more context to people who are not familiar with the history.

For this week’s blog post, I decided to choose Exploring the Vilnius Ghetto: A Digital Monument for my analysis.
