The 8 main maps include:

Mapping of canton to county ratio (Song history data source)

The size of the individual population in each prefecture

Spatial change in South China

Spatial change on the Song-Tangut Frontier

Distribution of counties during the Song Dynasty

Ratio of cantons to counties (Treatise on the Nine Territories data source)

Abolition of counties (1068-1073)

Creation and abolition of prefunctures between founding of regime and Song-Tangut War in 1040

These maps provide a good diversity of perspective into geopolitical events during the Song Dyansty and fluctuations in population. It also provides a good view of the arc of the Song Dynasty and what occurred in the lead up to war, what was required to maintain territory, and how structure of population areas changed over the years. The mapping over a few time periods of the Song Dynasty leads to insightful graphs of how the Chinese population was affected spatially during this dynasty and particularly there is a last graph detailing data which gives evidence to the claim that the Song Dynasty was one of significant state activism and state intervention in the lives of its subjects. This graph along with others showing the addition of prefunctures and counties shows how the Dynasty regularly manipulated location and spacing of their population for political purposes.

Cross-referenced county/prefecture/area data during Song Dynasty versus other historical eras

Note: I do apologize for the darkness of the above graph, due to technical difficulties, I could not find another work around.

This data is subject to Turbull’s ideas of perspectival and subjective mapping. In mapping out canton/county ratios, there is an assumption made that this is a good sign of population and management of the area. Also attributed to much of the spatial changes is the fact that they were on a northern, war frontier. These are assumptions and not necessarily the causal factors of both of these events. The mapping is therefore more perspectival than subjective. Similarly, I saw in another blog post someone mention that other events could have influenced the population and spatial changes we see in these maps such as agriculture, cultural centers, trade, etc. However, the makers of these maps did a very commendable job of minimizing bias in mapping.

A possible alternate map would include data mentioned above such as cultural centers of the time and whether there was a change in county/prefecture/canton spatial areas in reference to these centers. Similarly, looking at how trade may have affected the abolition of areas more so than political reasons. If these additional factors were considered and mapped, the arguments being made with the data provided would be stronger. The most convincing piece of evidence I found was the bar graph of county/prefecture areas and ratios against various other eras included above. Accounting for more variables during the Song Dynasty era would convince me further as to the validity of their claims.

The Digital Gazetter of the Song Dynasty is a very detailed and thorough documentation of various geological aspects of the

[1

post-2658","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
