Using the familiar google earth tool you can enter ‘street view’ on the map and compare modern day London to the 1746 streets before them. The site also allows the viewer to explore a number of datasets which various events that took place in London as well as given the opportunity to add your own data to the maps to compare. The data includes crime in the city as well as the different effects that deaths caused by the plague had on the city.

John Rocque’s map would have been suited for a highly educated and literate viewer of perhaps the upper class, useful for general knowledge of london as well as practical use. The compilation of historic data and maps creates for a map useful to historians and their geolocation of historic events useful to observe how they impacted these locations and how they stand today in the modern metropolis.

The viewer can select different base maps, for example a contemporary map and observe the changes and consistencies over time. This map, as based on John Rocque’s map formed in 1746, does not count for the expansion of London as the original map only considered what now is very central London. The map also obscures many time periods from the history of London and leaves out many events -such as political ones, instead it provides a narrative for selective trends the city has experienced. In an alternate version of this map different events would be focused on perhaps more centered around the people of London and their changing demographic.

As a Londoner myself I chose to explore the Locating London’s Past map project which held together a large site

[1

post-2645","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
