In this weeks blog we got to choose from different maps and observe them. I chose to look at the Digital Harlem map which shows a lot of different activity of everyday life between 1915-1930. There are different tabs which include selecting a person, timeline, and looking at different events that were going on in the area. On the map there are a lot of different tabs that include a lot of different information that in then laid out on the map. This makes it a lot easier to understand all the information that is thrown at you and it is also greatly organized. Turbull says that a map is always selective and that the mapmaker usually always decides what they are going to add into a map and what they will leave out. They can also d ecide what perspective and interests come with the map that they are decided on. It is subjective because of the different approaches that can come with the map. Some different assumptions that can be is that there were a lot of different activities that were going on in that time frame and area. Some different point of views that can be observed from this map is that the person that created this map is well aware of the wide varieties that are available to explore and look at while going over this map. It is interesting to me that there is so much going on in such a small area at one-time period. It ranges from sports, churches and night life events that are going on in the area. The map reveals where the exact location of activities were going on. The map was designed to organize clear data and break it down into streets and areas. Along with the information being spread out across the map, you can even scroll over the map and select the individual thing you are looking for with the help of a key on the left hand side. Further towards the left hand side of the website and map, it gives you a more in depth description of what your mouse is on on the map. I thought this was a great idea because sometimes the map can be a little busy and hard to see what you are looking at and this helps with the clarity of it. The map leaves out the ability to oversee how these hotspots of activities changed over time since this website is throughout 15 years.\u00a0 An alternative map could look like numerous little maps and so we could see the changes over time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
