At first glance, you can see the timelines are divided into three different time periods: 1833-1834, 1850-1856, 1865-1872. The map has four primary focuses, which are cholera outbreaks, hurricanes, tropical storms, and news articles. The difference concerning news articles is that they reflect only a single point in time which is a response to events that occur around the Caribbean. The way that the institute handles this map is to represent it not only as a geographic representation of cholera related events, but also as a visual and interactive timeline. The institute studies past events and news articles in the Caribbean to populate the map. This map, if we look at it from Turnbull’s perspective, is merely a referential and not a complete accurate depiction of cholera and related events in the Caribbean. It merely takes a dataset and potentially related events (hence the inclusion of hurricane and tropical storms) to create a working map.

Because the map takes data from recorded points in history in the Caribbeans, it takes the assumption that the scanned news clipping the map uses are real and true. It also takes the assumption that the reports regarding the hurricanes, tropical storms, and cholera outbreaks are true as well. Since the map is a look into the past, the map is created by an outsider’s point of view. Had the map reflect an insider’s point of view, it may include local reportings. In other words, there may be less usage of government letters or official news paper statements and more documents concerning witness testimonies. With that being said, the map reveals a lot of formal documentation, but it obscures what really goes on inside the Caribbeans.

If I were to reconstruct this map, I would dig more into the local reports and insights regarding a recent outbreak, hurricane, or tropical storm. I may create another focus point apart from News Articles and name it “Local Report.” The map also contains information outside the central point of focus (the Caribbean Islands). For example, there would be a tropical storm report far out into the Atlantic Ocean. I would remove all unnecessary information outside a certain boundary to keep the dataset smaller and cleaner. Besides these changes, I feel like the timeline and map is coherent and cohesive.

This week I decided to look into the 19th Century Caribbean Cholera Timeline and Map that was made by the

[1

post-2576","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
