It is a great aid to clean up the data as well as to help understanding about data with a closer look. My group’s data is Carnegie Museum of Art Photography Collection. Our content model included information of photography collections such as title, created date, medium, department, physical location, item size, image URL, artist birth/death date, and etc. Our possible research questions were about any chronological trend in preferred medium or size for photography. Also, we wondered if any event that affected those trend around the time when the creation of the photography happened.

One dilemma we had was that our data included 3 different dates for each item, which confused us about which is the most accurate and important date. Since we do not want graphs and charts to be messy with too many date options, we should contact the specialist as soon as possible to clarify it first, so that we can reduce the date into one column. Also, artist birth/death date can be merged into one column showing lifespan of the artist, instead of leaving them separate. This will allow us to make more simple and condensed data. I will definitely use “merge-column” function, so that there are less content types.

I would try to understand what the data stand for and what role it involves in whole research project. If it is influential issue, I will definitely refer to specialist’s opinion. Then, for functions in OpenRefine that I am not sure about yet, I will keep researching and utilizing resources on our course website.

I am really glad that I got to know OpenRefine.
