This program is an amazing tool for any group tackling a large dataset. It has several features that allow us to organize data, and clean up a lot of unnecessary data. I can see several elements that are provided in OpenRefine that will help my group take on our dataset.

My group is responsible for looking at the vast Carnegie Museum of Art Photography Collection. There are over 3000 records, which at first was heavily discouraging. However, after playing around with the tools that OpenRefine provide, I am more confident in taking apart this dataset. Through Professor Posner’s tutorial, I was able to fix specific things about my dataset that originally made it more daunting, like overlapping categories, extra whitespace, and inefficient ways of grouping data. Some of our groups preliminary questions revolve around the mediums of the art. We will most likely manipulate the mediums of art in our dataset by grouping them up into tighter categories. More specifically, a very common medium in our dataset is albumen print, however there are various types of albumen print, for example: cabinet card, carte de visite, hand applied color, stereograph. Moving forward, we will most likely just group them all up to be under albumen print. This is made possible with OpenRefine, by editing the facets to just say albumen print. One thing that I would like to be able to do to our data that I’m not quit sure how to do is making a uniform url with all the images. There are a couple of image url’s that currently don’t work or they simply come up as an error. So if we could develop one url with all the photos, that would get rid of the problem. Overall, OpenRefine is an awesome program and I am looking forward to using it moving on in the project.

For this week’s blog post, I got the chance to explore the software OpenRefine.
