This set charts all crime incidents since 2010 but is filtered to only show crimes from August 1, 2016 to August 30, 2017 from all over Los Angeles. This data is said to be accurate although it was transferred from handwritten records. Some information is missing and some is also diclsoed for privacy concerns. The information includes the date the crime reported as well as the date, time, location(city, dicstrict, closest station, premise description, street, and cross streets) the crime occured. The other important information included is the description of crime committed and the weapon used and the status of the case. The last thing that matters in this dataset is the age, sex, and race of the victim.

The ontology of this dataset was to show and track crime in the city. the categories included in the set make it easy to understand and relate to from a regular citixen perspective. It allows the people of Los Angeles to view and understand what is going on in their city. It can help them know areas in the city to try to avoid and even have more security of feeling safe in areas that they may reside in.

What is significant about this dataset is that by including so many categories you can find cases with people similar to yourself. You could also see all the crime on the street you live on. interesting about this set is that crime victims were almost half men and half wome (men more by 300 or 400). Information that I feel is importnat that they left out is the criminals age, sex and race. i feel like it was weird that they showed the vicctims inflormation but diclosed the criminals. Other information left out was informatoin on the officer that reported to the seen or the case.

If this dataset’s ontology was different I could see it bieng in the perspective of a protest group like the Black Lives Matter Movement. They could base the dataset around race, gender and location to see if there is any significance in the data pertaining to the movement in Los Angeles. Maybe certain crimes are significantly showing to happen to black females during certain times or areas. That could make this dataset very helpful especially with the ability to filter it. Another group that this could be in the perspective of would be a neighborhood watch group. They could see where and when their neighborhood and streets are in the most danger.

For this week’s assignment, I chose to analyze the ‘Crime, Homeless Victim 8/16-8/17‘ dataset.
