This finding aid, Collection of Heavy Metal Material, contains many different materials about heavy metal and its history. The aid notes that there are books, DVDs, show fliers, photographs, ephemera, memorabilia, Fanzines, backstage passes, t-shirts, magazines, and recordings. Based on these materials one can tell narratives ranging from the fans\u2019 perspective of the bands, to the bands\u2019 own development over their career.<\/p>\n
The photographs could show what the concerts actually looked like, what the stage set looked like, the kinds of people who attended the concerts, and perhaps the recordings to showcase the sounds of the concerts itself. Magazines could offer the critics view of the heavy metal scene; perhaps positive views of the genre or negative criticisms.<\/p>\n
Additionally, there are autobiographies of the stars themselves. One is entitled: \u201cGot the Life: My Journey of Addiction, Faith, Recovery, and Korn.\u201d This book could show a personal view of the genre and the experience of the band Korn. We could see a glimpse into the \u201cbehind-the-scenes\u201d aspect of the industry. There are many autobiographies recounting the band members\u2019 personal experience, that could shed light on maybe why they broke up, how experiences influenced the music they produced, etc.<\/p>\n
Another interesting item I found referenced is the cookbook; \u201cHellbent for Cooking: The Heavy Metal Cookbook.\u201d\u00a0 This book, while humorous, could show the cuisine of the heavy metal world. There are also fan club letters, which are materials that capture the emotional and personal connection of fans with their beloved bands.<\/p>\n
Honestly, the scope and content of the collection is so vast, I\u2019m not sure what narratives or perspectives could be absent. The only thing I think is missing, are materials showing the critics\u2019 perspective. For instance, I know that certain religious groups disapproved of the heavy metal scene. These groups may have protested or wrote propaganda against the genre. Could there be photos of church-going women protesting a local concert? Maybe even concerned parents who wanted to ban such music? Where are these narratives?<\/p>\n
I would search in other historical archives for newspapers or religious magazines from the time featuring articles that criticise the genre. Maybe old recordings of religious shows that discuss outrage against it.<\/p>\n
Another perspective that is absent are those of the loved ones; wives, children, etc. of the band members. How were they impacted by their loved one\u2019s career and problems that may have arisen from this?
