The materials in this collection are surprisingly varied and dense. From vinyl recordings to basic flyers and promotions, the general scope of heavy metal music is well covered.<\/p>\n
The overarching historical narrative I glean from this collection is one of “pop” metal. When I say pop metal, I don’t mean radio metal. I simply mean the parts of the genre that became mainstream within it. Unlike rap and rock, metal hasn’t ever really gained traction in popular media. However, this collection seems to be based around whatever was popular within the genre. This narrative appears to portray the genre as a sort of connect the dots from one big metal band to another.<\/p>\n
What is missing from this collection is more underground metal. In fact, it seems as though the collection has completely ignored the existence of the internet. Similar to independent rap music and garage-rock bands, metal also has a subculture. However, whereas the dominant culture uses production labels and concerts as a means of exposure, the underground culture relies on word of mouth, often through the internet. Unfortunately, this subculture is not recognized by the collection at hand. In a sense, this could be considered symbolic annihilation as underground metal has zero representation (at least within this collection).<\/p>\n
Helpful sources could include YouTube links to metal cover bands and original, lesser known artists. Another good resource could be independent audio hosting sites like Soundcloud. Depending on availability, home recordings of metal performances at school talent shows would be interesting along with those of buskers performing metal songs.<\/p>\n
While this collection does a good job highlighting pop metal, it lacks the sources that could fully develop the subculture of independent and underground metal.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
