This collection contains 121 photographs of African American politicians in California. These pictures are from 1955 to 1964. They were all mainly captured by photographer Harry A. Adams.

Miriam Matthews was the first African American librarian at the Los Angeles Public Library. She was a active member of the black community and during the civil rights movement. She collected African american art and history and her contributions to African American history won her awards.

The narrative that I drew from this collection was major African American politicians and figures active in the California communities. Majority of the photos are these African American figures either with other regular infamous members of the community. it shows them at big or normal events throughout the community such as ribbon cuttings, weddings and birthdays. The other pictures, that do not include these African American politicians, show regular African Americans throughout the community in their environment like the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority or the women sitting at a table looking at a poster of the Y.W.C.A. Woodlawn Center or the black seamen on a ship. I think she was trying to capture the community at this time as well as the activity, work and impact the African American politicians had on the community of Los Angeles, California.

From this narrative, we will never know if this is all the photographs in the collection or if this is a cut up for a reason meaning that they only kept a certain amount of photos and got ride of the rest. With majority of the photographs coming from one photographer we only can see what this one individual could capture. Having photographs from other photographers can draw a whole new narrative including missing angles, people and views. The photos also only have a very minimal description of what the actual photo is. Most photograph descriptions are the name of the person in the photo and where they might be. It doesn’t include things like what they are doing or what they are doing or even the time of the photo. Another thing I find interesting is that the other individuals in the images are not described or identified. Most importantly their race. Are the images show integration between white and black people or strictly African Americans in California. More written input from Miriam Matthews would fill in the gaps. It would be easier to piece together the story she was trying to tell with this collection of images.

For this week, I chose to do my blog on the Guide to Miriam Matthews photograph collection.
