For this weeks blog I chose to read the complete finding aid of the <\/span>1984 Free Speech Movement Memorial Rally collection. Within this collection there are three pictures all by different photographers. All three of the photographs are of Mario Savio at the free speech movement at UC Berkeley. By analyzing this collection you can begin to piece together a slight historical narrative. The rally was clearly well attended which you can make the assumption that the cause behind the rally was influential to the community and the activist that participated in it were engaged. The engagement of the audience lets us know that it was something that people were passionate about. The speaker\u2019s passion in the photographs is another sign that he felt very strongly about the side of the speech he was arguing\/persuading the people to support.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although you can begin to put the pieces together of this narrative together there is still a lot of holes left that the collection leaves empty. The collection only having three photographs leaves a lot out of the story that you have to answer yourself. Some of the pieces that are left out of the narrative include why the free speech movement was occurring in the first place. What was the cause of the rally and what was the political\/social situation at the time? Other questions that the collection left was if the rally resolved the problem and what the effect of the rally was on the people who attended and the social setting at UC Berkeley.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ways that these holes and gaps in the narrative could be resolved would be to attach link to the full speech of the rally or to newspaper articles that occurred the following day on the stories of the speech. Also attaching a bio of Mario Savio would be helpful, it would allow us to know more about his background in public speaking and how much he knew about the topic of the rally and why he was the speaker that was chosen. Looking for comments from bystanders from the rally and attaching them to this collection could help give a more full narrative and complete story. <\/span><\/p>\n

This collection is an interesting one because it doesn’t have enough information for you to know what the rally was about or how it affected society in the time period, but is has just enough to where it leaves you curious to figure out for yourself what the outcome was and what got people to attend and be so passionate about it. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
