This week, I looked at the Collection of Heavy Metal Music Material<\/a>, which is a collection of published works, archival material, and other items related to heavy metal music and fan culture from the late 1960s through the present. The collection is organized in 6 series: Books and DVDs; Show fliers; Photographs, ephemera, and memorabilia; Fanzines; Magazines; Recordings. Heavy metal is one of my least favorite types of music so I wanted to explore this collection and learn more about its background and history to try to understand the genre better.<\/p>\n

Based on the materials in this collection, we could easily construct a narrative of the heavy metal music scene from biographies of musicians, histories of the genre, magazines, show fliers, photographs, and records and CDs. There are especially strong sources of show fliers and other memorabilia within the Los Angeles and San Francisco area. With over 20 boxes of material, we could also tell more focused narratives, such as the growth of KISS and the influence of makeup. There are multiple books in the collection about KISS and makeup, such as Makeup to Breakup: My Life In and Out of Kiss.<\/em> There are even intact packages of KISS makeup that we could look at in person.<\/p>\n

Biographies, autobiographies, magazines, interviews, and song recordings are just some of the sources discussed that would help us write our narrative. Some things that may be missing from our narrative are fan letters or articles from the fans’ point of view. We may also want to look for more materials outside of Los Angeles and San Francisco.<\/p>\n

The sources that we would need to address these gaps could be blog posts, journal entries, photographs or other contributions from KISS fans. We may also need photographs, newspaper articles, radio recordings, show fliers, and other material from other parts of the US and maybe even internationally.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
