I was interested in looking at this collection because these images depict what Japanese men and women did for fun during their time at the center. I was specifically drawn to the photograph taken by Tom Parker of women performing theatrical folk lore. I find myself to be very interested and drawn to other people’s cultures, and it’s amazing that collections like these exist so that we all have the ability to study other cultures and see how they lived and worked.

Again from these photos, you can see what the Japanese people did for entertainment: Performances, dancing, games, working in fields, wrestling, etc. All these activities were done at the Heart Mountain Relocation Center. Although these images are incredibly powerful, we don’t get the full story behind the images. Pictures can only do so much, and it would be beneficial if we knew the story behind the images. The Heart Mountain Relocation Center was used during WWII to hold Japanese people. They were incarcerated as result from an executive order by President Franklin Roosevelt. The Japanese people were held at this center from August 1942 to November 1945, meaning these pictures were taken at the heart of their incarceration. In many ways, this collection could only be telling one side of the story. Although the images do highlight activity and entertainment, it doesn’t tell us how often they were able to partake in these activities, and how the Japanese felt throughout this time period. This all goes back to last lecture when we spoke about Positivism and Constructivism. Because history is made up of both fact and narrative, in order to get a more wholesome, more constructivist idea on what happened during this time period, we need to know the narratives of the Japanese people. In order to address those gaps, interviews with Japanese people at the time would have been very beneficial. It would be relatively difficult to track down people who lived at the Heart Mountain Relocation Center during 1942-1943 today and language may be a barrier; however, to get the whole picture/the whole story behind what was captured behind the camera, personal narratives and stories would be valuable to add to this collection. I still really appreciate this collection and how it can feed the minds of those interested in studying this time period.

This week, I took a look at the “Guide to the Activities and entertainment at Heart Mountain Relocation Center.” It’s

[1

post-1036","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
