Additionally, the 1932 Olympics were the first Olympic Games hosted in Los Angeles, and given that we are coming up on yet another Los Angeles Olympics in 2024, I thought it seemed like an appropriate choice. That being said, the collection was super cool to learn about.

The specifics of the collection are as follows; the exhibit was funded by California State University, Dominguez Hills. Its extent is 1 box, .5 linear ft and it consists mostly of photographs, each divided into three different folders. The first folder is titled “Labels and 1932 program copies 1984.” The second folder is titled “Photographs of cyclists and bicycle advertisement 1932.” The last folder is titled “Photographs of rowing, lacrosse, swimming, relay; also an aerial of the Los Angeles Colesium during a major event and publicity photos 1932. Encapsulated map showing event locations, with schedules and entrance fees (in map case 2, drawer 9) 1932.” Clearly the folder titles are straightforward in what they contain.

I identified a couple of historical narratives within this collection. For example, the photographs would be a great indicator of what Los Angeles looked like nearly a century ago. It would be easy to compare photos of the present day Colesium with the photos from the 1932 Olympic Games. Additonally, the photographs (and program copies) would provide insight into what an Olympics looked like back in the day. More specifically, one could compare the cycling photos to see the evolution in bikes, biking gear (suits, helmets, shoes, etc.). Generally, I feel that the collection as a whole stands as a phenomenal way to gage the evolution of the Olympic Games as an event over the past 75 years.

However, there’s always more to learn. Although pictures are worth a thousand words, they can’t tell a whole story. For instance, I would like to know how the photos were obtained and what kind of camera they were taken with. I would like to know all of the sports that were included in those Olympics and why only certain ones were included in the collection/photographs. I would like to know who won the events that are photographed and what country they represented (assuming it isn’t obvious from the pictures). I think a good deal of this information could be found from newspaper articles written during that time.

For this week’s blog post I focused in on the “Inventory of the 1932 Olympics Exhibition Collection 1932, 1984.” I

[1

post-1014","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized
["GET
